👉 Kickstarter in the context of Extrasolar

Extrasolar was a 2014 video game developed by Lazy 8 Studios. Described as a single-player browser game with alternate reality elements, players interacted with a browser interface and map on the game's website to receive updates on a mars rover exploring the surface of a fictional planet, Epsilon Prime. Gameplay consisted of issuing commands the rover to points of interest on the planet, with travel and updates from the rover taking several real-time hours to complete. Following release, Extrasolar received positive review coverage, with praise directed to its attention to detail and realism and the merit of its passive gameplay model. It received several accolades, including as a nominee for the Nuovo Award at the Independent Games Festival. Due to rising costs and the failure of a Kickstarter campaign to fund future content, the developers of Extrasolar discontinued the game on 1 December 2018.

Kickstarter in the context of Scythe (board game)

Scythe is a board game for one to five players designed by Jamey Stegmaier and published by Stonemaier Games in 2016. Set in an alternative history version of 1920s Europe, players control factions that produce resources, develop economic infrastructure, and use dieselpunk combat mechs to engage in combat and control territories. Players take up to two actions per turn using individual player boards, and the game proceeds until one player has earned six achievements. At this point, the players receive coins for the achievements they have attained and the territories they control, and the player with the most coins is declared the winner.

Stonemaier Games crowdfunded the development of Scythe, raising over $1.8 million through a Kickstarter campaign. Scythe was released to critical and commercial praise for its gameplay, combination of Eurogame and combat mechanics, theme, and the game artwork, which was produced by Polish painter Jakub Różalski under the name World of 1920+. Three major expansions, a spin-off, and a digital version have been released for the game.

Kickstarter in the context of Allbirds

Allbirds is an American public benefit company originating in New Zealand that sells footwear and apparel, co-founded in 2015 by Tim Brown and Joey Zwillinger. The company is headquartered in San Francisco, and is known for their minimalist designs, association with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, and Silicon Valley. Its business model has primarily relied on direct-to-consumer commerce through its website and brick and mortar stores, although it has also sold products through some third-party retailers.

Allbirds was founded through an initial fundraising of US$119,000 on Kickstarter and has based its corporate identity on sustainability. Since the 2020s, the company has been criticized by legal scholars for greenwashing after a case about their reporting of carbon offsets was dismissed. Allbirds went public on November 3, 2021, but experienced poor sales soon afterwards; executive turnover followed the company through the end of 2024. On April 8, 2024, the company received a non-compliance notice from Nasdaq for performing below $1 for over 30 consecutive days.

Kickstarter in the context of Apocalypse World

Apocalypse World is a post-apocalyptic indie role-playing game by D. Vincent Baker and Meguey Baker, published in 2010 with only an implied setting that is fleshed out by the players in the course of character creation. It was the game for which the Powered by the Apocalypse engine was developed. On release, Apocalypse World won the 2010 Indie RPG Award and 2011 Golden Geek RPG of the year.

A second edition was successfully Kickstarted in 2016. This edition updated some of the mechanics (HX, battle-moves, threat map, etc.), playbooks (including replacing the Operator with Maestro-D and Quarantine), and brought Meguey Baker on board as co-designer, but retained most of the original's design. A redesign, Apocalypse World: Burned Over, has been in development since 2021. Burned Over is a hackbook rather than a stand-alone edition, being a partial document that requires and builds upon the 2nd Edition.
