Yanam district (Telugu: [jaːnaːm]) (previously Yanaon, (French: [janaɔ̃])) is one of the four census districts of the Union Territory of Puducherry in India. Administratively it falls under the Puducherry district.

The Puducherry Legislative Assembly (French: Assemblée législative de Pondichéry) is the unicameral legislature of the Indian union territory (UT) of Puducherry, which comprises four districts: Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahé and Yanam. Out of eight union territories of India, only three have legislatures and they are Delhi, Puducherry and Jammu and Kashmir. After delimitation shortly after its formation, the Puducherry legislative assembly has 30 seats, of which 5 are reserved for candidates from scheduled castes and 3 members are nominated by the Government of India. 30 members are elected directly by the people based on universal adult franchise . These nominated members enjoy the same powers as elected members of the assembly.
Geographically, the area under the Puducherry UT consists of three disjointed regions, with Puducherry and Karaikal districts surrounded by districts of Tamil Nadu, Yanam district an enclave of East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, and Mahé district bordered by districts of Kerala. The four districts were ruled by the French before they were integrated into India in 1962. For ease of administration, during French rule, the area under these four districts was divided into 39 assembly constituencies. After becoming a UT of India, Puducherry was divided into 30 assembly constituencies, which were restructured in 2005 by the Delimitation Commission of India.

Puducherry, also known as Pondicherry, is a union territory of India, consisting of four small geographically unconnected districts. It was formed out of four territories of former French India, namely Pondichéry (now Puducherry), Karikal (Karaikal), Mahé and Yanaon (now Yanam), excluding Chandannagar (Chandernagore), and it is named after the largest district, Puducherry, which was also the capital of French India. Historically known as Pondicherry, the territory changed its official name to Puducherry on 1 October 2006.
The Union Territory of Puducherry lies in the southern part of the Indian Peninsula. The areas of Puducherry district and Karaikal district are bound by the state of Tamil Nadu, while Yanam district and Mahé district are enclosed by the states of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, respectively. Puducherry is the 29th most populous of the 36 states and union territories of India, and the third most densely populated union territory. It has a gross domestic product (GDP) of ₹210 billion (US$2.5 billion) and ranks 25th in India.

Yanam (Telugu: [jaːnaːw̃]) (previously Yanaon, (French: [janaɔ̃])) is a town located in the Yanam district in Puducherry, India. It has a population of 35,000 and is entirely surrounded by Andhra Pradesh. It was formerly a French colony for nearly 200 years, and, though united with India in 1954, is still sometimes known as "French Yanam". It possesses a blend of French culture and the Telugu culture, nicknamed Frelugu. During French rule, the Tuesday market (Marché du mardi or Maṃgaḷavaram Saṃta) at Yanam was popular among the Telugu people in the Madras Presidency, who visited Yanam to buy foreign and smuggled goods during Yanam People's Festival held in January.

The Telugu states are the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and the Yanam enclave of Puducherry, where the plurality of the population belongs to the Telugu ethnic-group. When put together, the region is bordered by Maharashtra to the north, Karnataka to the west, Odisha, Chhattisgarh to the northeast, Tamil Nadu to the south and the Bay of Bengal, Yanam district enclave of Puducherry to the east. The unified state of Andhra Pradesh was established in 1956 through the merger of the Telugu-speaking Andhra State with the Telangana region of the former Hyderabad State under the States Reorganisation Act. The referential term of Telugu states has been in use ever since the bifurcation of its preceding political entity United Andhra Pradesh in 2014. However, the development and official status of Amaravati remain subjects of ongoing political and administrative deliberation. Based on the 2023 Census of India, Telangana had a population of 38,272,000, and Andhra Pradesh had 53,340,000 bringing the combined population of the Telugu states to 91.62 million.
