Đông Nam Bộ (literally "Southeast region") is a region in Southern Vietnam. This region includes one municipality, Ho Chi Minh City; and five provinces: Đồng Nai, Bình Dương, Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu province, Bình Phước and Tây Ninh. The two south central provinces Ninh Thuận and Bình Thuận are sometimes seen as part of the Southeast region. This region is the most economically developed region in Vietnam. In 2006, this region contributed 148,000 billion VND (equal to $9.25 billion) out of 251,000 billion VND to the state budget. This region is also the most highly urbanized in the country with more than 50% people living in urban areas (while the equivalent figure for Vietnam is just 25%).

The language is also widely spoken by Khmer people in Eastern Thailand and Isan, Thailand, as well as in the Southeastern and Mekong Delta regions of Vietnam.

Khmer has been influenced considerably by Sanskrit and Pali especially in the royal and religious registers, through Hinduism and Buddhism, due to Old Khmer being the language of the historical empires of Chenla and Angkor.

Southeast (Vietnam) in the context of Vũng Tàu

Vũng Tàu (Hanoi accent: [vuŋm˧ˀ˥ taːw˨˩] , Saigon accent: [vuŋm˧˩˧ taːw˨˩] ) is a former coastal city in southeast Vietnam. The city covered 141.1 km (54.5 sq mi) of area and consisted of 16 urban wards on Vũng Tàu island with one other islandic commune of Long Sơn including the same name island and Gò Găng Island. The city is also the crude oil extraction center of Vietnam.

Since 2025, Vũng Tàu City was legally abolished and became a part of Ho Chi Minh City just like its parent province Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu. The name Vũng Tàu is re-adopted by a ward-level subdivision covering the southern cape of the peninsula, the heart of the former city; however, the whole area of the former city still colloquially called as 'Vũng Tàu' like many other major provincial cities on the nation were dissolved.

Southeast (Vietnam) in the context of Ho Chi Minh City metropolitan area

Ho Chi Minh City metropolitan area (Vietnamese: Vùng đô thị Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh) is a metropolitan area that was proposed by the Ministry of Construction of Vietnam to the Government of Vietnam for approval in June 2008. According to this master plan, this metropolitan area will include provinces around Ho Chi Minh City in the Southeast region and 2 provinces in the Mekong Delta region.

This metropolitan area currently has an area of 30,404 square kilometres with radius of 150–200 km, a population of 20–22 million inhabitants, of which urban residents account for 16–17 million indicating an urbanisation rate of 77–80%. By 2050, the population will have increased to 25-27 million people, and the urbanized rate is estimated to rise to 90%. Constructed land will be 1800–2100 square kilometres by 2020. Ho Chi Minh City will be the core urban center of the area while other surrounding cities and towns will play their role as satellite municipalities. Baria-Vungtau will serve as the main deepwater seaport of the region, especially Sao Mai-Ben Dinh seaport, Thi Vai Port. Long Thanh International Airport and Tan Son Nhat International Airport will serve as the air traffic hub of the region. Hi-tech park will be located in Ho Chi Minh City while other heavy industry will concentrate in Đồng Nai, Bình Dương and Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu. Vũng Tàu is planned to serve as a tourism hub, with coastal beaches and several entertainment resort projects.
