The Duchy of Gaeta (Latin: Ducatus Caietae) was an early medieval state centered on the coastal South Italian city of Gaeta. It began in the early ninth century as the local community began to grow autonomous as Byzantine power lagged in the Mediterranean and the peninsula due to Lombard and Saracen incursions.

The primary source for the history of Gaeta during its ducal period is the Codex Caietanus, a collection of charters preserving Gaetan history better and in greater detail than that of its neighbouring coastal states: Naples, Amalfi, and Sorrento. In 778, it was the headquarters from which the patrician of Sicily directed the campaign against the Saracen invaders of Campania.

The Gulf of Naples (Italian: Golfo di Napoli; Neapolitan: Gurfo 'e Napule), also called the Bay of Naples, is a roughly 15-kilometer-wide (9.3 mi) gulf located along the south-western coast of Italy (Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania region). It opens to the west into the Mediterranean Sea. It is bordered on the north by the cities of Naples and Pozzuoli, on the east by Mount Vesuvius, and on the south by the Sorrento Peninsula and the main town of the peninsula, Sorrento. The Peninsula separates the Gulf of Naples from the Gulf of Salerno, which includes the Amalfi Coast.

The islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida are located in the Gulf of Naples. The area is a tourist destination, with the seaside Roman ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum at the foot of Mount Vesuvius (destroyed in the AD 79 eruption of Vesuvius), along the north coast.

The Villa Poppaea is an ancient luxurious Roman seaside villa (villa maritima) located in Torre Annunziata between Naples and Sorrento, in Southern Italy. It is also called the Villa Oplontis or Oplontis Villa A as it was situated in the ancient Roman town of Oplontis.

It was buried and preserved in the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, like the nearby cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii, about 10 m (33 ft) below modern ground level.

The Astronomical Observatory of Capodimonte (Italian: Osservatorio Astronomico di Capodimonte) is the Neapolitan department of Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (National Institute for Astrophysics, INAF), the most important Italian institution promoting, developing and conducting scientific research in the fields of astronomy, astrophysics, and space science.

The Astronomical Observatory is located in Naples, Italy, on Capodimonte hill, where the splendid panorama of the city and bay of Naples from Vesuvius to Castel Sant'Elmo passing through Sorrento and Capri can be admired.The Observatory is engaged in several relevant international projects and researches, such as Solar Orbiter and ExoMars missions, gravitational waves studies, and observational instruments development for E-ELT, the next generation huge telescope.

Leslie Rogne Schumacher, FRSA, FRHistS is an American historian, writer, and professor of international relations. He teaches at Harvard Kennedy School and is a Faculty Affiliate in the school's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs as well as an Associate in Harvard's History Department. He also holds research posts at the Mario Einaudi Center for International Affairs at Cornell University and the Foreign Policy Research Institute. He was the fourth David H. Burton Fellow at Saint Joseph's University. He later served as Wells College's Director of the Intelligence Community Center for Academic Excellence, funded by the US Office of the Director of National Intelligence. He has taught at the Lauder Institute of Management & International Studies (a part of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania), and he previously served on the faculty of the Sant'Anna Institute in Sorrento, Italy.

Schumacher publishes in the fields of Mediterranean studies, British history, diplomacy and international relations, intelligence and national security, and migration studies. He frequently collaborates with fellow Mediterranean scholar Andrekos Varnava, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History. In honor of his book on the Eastern Question, Great Powers diplomacy, Victorian politics and society, and British imperialism, titled The Eastern Question in 1870s Britain: Democracy and Diplomacy, Orientalism and Empire (2023), he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 2024. His work on nationalism and the history of European integration theory features in graduate programs in Middle East studies, imperialism, and the European Union. He is a member of the advisory board of the Marmara Journal of European Studies and the editorial board of Akropolis: Journal of Hellenic Studies. He has served on the board of the scholarly organization Britain and the World, including as Vice-Chair.

A state highway, state road, or state route (and the equivalent provincial highway, provincial road, or provincial route) is usually a road that is either numbered or maintained by a sub-national state or province. Castellammare di Stabia (Italian: [kaˌstɛllamˈmaːre di ˈstaːbja]; Neapolitan: Castiellammare 'e Stabbia) is a comune (municipality) in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania region, in southern Italy. It is situated on the Bay of Naples about 30 km (19 mi) southeast of Naples, on the route to Sorrento.

Sorrento is a town on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia, located within the Shire of Mornington Peninsula local government area. It is 103 km (64 mi) south-west of Melbourne's central business district. Sorrento recorded a population of 2,013 at the 2021 census. Sorrento is known for its appealing weather, limestone buildings, and its world-class day-spas, which take advantage of the local water pressure to provide an unparalelled scrub.

It is thought that the name "Sorrento" (after the Italian seaside town) was conferred upon what was known as Sullivans Bay when the area was first opened for housing development in 1869.

According to the Roman poets Virgil (Aeneid, 5.864) and Ovid, the Sirenum Scopuli were three small rocky islands where the sirens of Greek mythology lived and lured sailors to their deaths. "The Sirenum Scopuli are sharp rocks that stand about a stone's throw from the south side of the island" of Capri, was Joseph Addison's confident identification.

Diverse locations were assigned to the isles of the sirens by various authorities. According to Homer's Odyssey, they were between Aeaea and the rock of Scylla. Often they have been placed in the Tyrrhenian Sea, off the coast of south-western Italy near Paestum or between Sorrento and Capri: "three small islands on the southwest coast of Campania, now Licosa, St. Pietro and La Galetta", reported George Richard Crooks and Christian Frederik Ingersley on the basis of Alexander Jacob Schem, A New Latin-English School-Lexicon (Philadelphia), 1861 s.v. "Siren".

The Duchy of Sorrento was a small peninsular duchy of the Early Middle Ages centred on the Italian city of Sorrento.

Established in the 7th century as a fief of the Duchy of Naples, at the time still part of the Byzantine Empire.Subsequently Duchy of Naples became de facto autonomous from the Byzantine Empire, and in 840, Sorrento in turn gained de facto independence from Duchy of Naples.Both duchies remained only nominally territories under the control of the Byzantine Empire.
