Tampere metropolitan area or Tampere region (Finnish: Tampereen seutu, Swedish: Tammerfors region) is the metropolitan area around the city of Tampere in Finland. The joint municipal authority of the Tampere city region (Finnish: Tampereen kaupunkiseutu, Swedish: Tammerfors stadsregion) consists of eight municipalities: Tampere, Kangasala, Lempäälä, Nokia, Orivesi, Pirkkala, Vesilahti and Ylöjärvi. The Tampere metropolitan area forms a compact, urban-like regional growth centre where people commute from a relatively large area of the Pirkanmaa region.

The Tampere metropolitan area has a population of about 425,000, making it the second largest region in Finland after Helsinki. The terms Tampere metropolitan area, Tampere region, Tampere city region, Greater Tampere and the other terms used are not fixed and may vary in different contexts.

The Tampere Ring Road (Finnish: Tampereen kehätie) or former Finnish National Road 60 (Finnish: Kantatie 60) is a ring road in the Tampere metropolitan area, Finland. It runs (from west to east) from Ylöjärvi to Tampere, passing through Nokia and Pirkkala. Its western part is part of Highway 3 (between Helsinki and Vaasa), while its eastern part is part of Highway 9 (between Turku and Tohmajärvi).

The ring road has been a motorway along its entire length since 2009. The main section of the ring road is used by more than 50,000 vehicles per day. According to the ELY Centre of Pirkanmaa, the western part of the ring road is the busiest road in Finland, excluding the motorway and ring road connections in the Helsinki metropolitan area.

Finnish national road 12 (Finnish: Valtatie 12; Swedish: Riksväg 12) is a highway in Finland between Rauma and Kouvola via Huittinen, Tampere and Lahti. The road is 339 kilometres (211 mi) long. It is known as Teiskontie to the east of the Tampere urban area.

Pyhäjärvi (Finnish: [ˈpyhæˌjærʋi]) is a lake in southern Finland. Although the name means "holy lake" in modern Finnish, it probably originally meant "border lake". Pyhäjärvi is shaped like the letter C with the cities of Tampere and Nokia at the northern end, and the town of Lempäälä at the southern end.

The lake is fed by the water running through the Tammerkoski rapids in the center of Tampere from the north, and by the waters from lake Vanajavesi in the south. Due to the Tammerkoski rapids, the water in Pyhäjärvi is warmer and richer in ozone than that in the northern lake, Näsijärvi, which results in the life in this lake being richer, even though the water is more polluted.

Ylöjärvi (Finnish: [ˈyløˌjærʋi]) is a town in Finland, located in the Pirkanmaa region. It lies to the west of the regional capital, Tampere. The population of Ylöjärvi is approximately 34,000, while the metropolitan area has a population of approximately 425,000. It is the 35th most populous municipality in Finland, and the fourth largest in the Pirkanmaa region after Tampere, Nokia and Kangasala.

Ylöjärvi is located 14 kilometres (9 mi) northwest of Tampere and 189 kilometres (117 mi) north of the capital city of Helsinki in Finland. Ylöjärvi has an area of 1,324.14 square kilometres (511.25 sq mi) of which 208.62 km (80.55 sq mi) is water. The population density is 30.23 inhabitants per square kilometre (78.3/sq mi).
