Tampere is a city in Finland and the regional capital of Pirkanmaa. It is in the Finnish Lakeland. Tampere's population is about 261,000, while the metropolitan area has a population of about 425,000. It is Finland's 3rd most populous municipality and the second most populous urban area in the country after the Helsinki metropolitan area.

Turku is Finland's oldest city. It is not known when Turku was granted city status. Pope Gregory IX first mentioned the town of Aboa in his Bulla in 1229, and this year is now used as the founding year of the city. Turku was the most important city in the eastern part (today's Finland) of the Kingdom of Sweden. After the Finnish War, Finland became an autonomous Grand Duchy of the Russian Empire in 1809, and Turku became the capital of the Grand Duchy. However, Turku lost its status as capital only three years later in 1812, when Tsar Alexander I of Russia decided to move the capital to Helsinki. It was only after the last great fire in 1827 that most government institutions were moved to Helsinki along with the Royal Academy of Turku, founded in 1640, which later became the University of Helsinki, thus consolidating Helsinki's position as the new capital. Turku was Finland's most populous city until the late 1840s and remains the regional capital, an important business and cultural centre, and a port.

Pirkanmaa (Finnish: [ˈpirkɑmˌmɑː]; Swedish: Birkaland; Latin: Birkaria), also known as Tampere Region in government documents, is a region of Finland. It borders the regions of Satakunta, South Ostrobothnia, Central Finland, Päijät-Häme, Kanta-Häme and Southwest Finland. Most of the water area in the Kokemäki River watershed is located in the Pirkanmaa region, although Lake Vanajavesi is partly in the Kanta-Häme region. The region got its name from Pirkkala, which in the Middle Ages comprised most of present-day Pirkanmaa. Tampere is the regional center and capital of Pirkanmaa, and at the same time the largest city in the region.

The total population of Pirkanmaa was 529,100 on 30 June 2022, which makes it the second largest among Finland's regions after Uusimaa. The population density is well over twice the Finnish average, and most of its population is largely concentrated in the Tampere metropolitan area.

The joint municipal authority of the Turku city region (Finnish: Turun kaupunkiseutu, Swedish: Åbo stadsregion) consists of six municipalities: Turku, Kaarina, Lieto, Naantali, Raisio and Rusko. The Turku metropolitan area forms a compact, urban-like regional growth centre where people commute from a relatively large area of the Southwest Finland region.

The population of Pirkkala is approximately 21,000, while the metropolitan area has a population of approximately 425,000. It is the 48th most populous municipality in Finland.

Pirkkala has an area of 104.04 square kilometres (40.17 sq mi) of which 22.66 km (8.75 sq mi) is water. The population density is 260.43 inhabitants per square kilometre (674.5/sq mi), which makes it the most densely populated municipality in Finland that does not use the title of town or city. Pirkkala is also currently the fastest-growing municipality in the Pirkanmaa region. The municipality is unilingually Finnish.

The Tampere Ring Road (Finnish: Tampereen kehätie) or former Finnish National Road 60 (Finnish: Kantatie 60) is a ring road in the Tampere metropolitan area, Finland. It runs (from west to east) from Ylöjärvi to Tampere, passing through Nokia and Pirkkala. Its western part is part of Highway 3 (between Helsinki and Vaasa), while its eastern part is part of Highway 9 (between Turku and Tohmajärvi).

The ring road has been a motorway along its entire length since 2009. The main section of the ring road is used by more than 50,000 vehicles per day. According to the ELY Centre of Pirkanmaa, the western part of the ring road is the busiest road in Finland, excluding the motorway and ring road connections in the Helsinki metropolitan area.

Kangasala is a town in Finland, located in the Pirkanmaa region. It lies to the east of the regional capital, Tampere. The population of Kangasala is approximately 34,000, while the metropolitan area has a population of approximately 425,000. It is the 34th most populous municipality in Finland.

Kangasala was founded in 1865. The town covers an area of 870.86 km (336.24 sq mi) of which 212.83 km (82.17 sq mi) is water. The population density is 52.15 inhabitants per square kilometre (135.1/sq mi).

Lempäälä (Finnish: [ˈlempæːlæ]) is a municipality in Finland, located in the Pirkanmaa region. It lies south of the regional capital, Tampere. The population of Lempäälä is approximately 25,000, while the metropolitan area has a population of approximately 425,000. It is the 41st most populous municipality in Finland.

The municipality covers an area of 307.06 square kilometres (118.56 sq mi) of which 37.51 km (14.48 sq mi) is water. The population density is 92.87 inhabitants per square kilometre (240.5/sq mi).
