City of regional significance (Ukraine) in the context of "Administrative divisions of Ukraine"

Kharkiv Raion (Ukrainian: Харківський район) is a raion (district) of Kharkiv Oblast in eastern Ukraine. Its administrative center is the city of Kharkiv. Population: 1,729,049 (2022 estimate).

On 18 July 2020, as part of the administrative reform of Ukraine, the number of raions of Kharkiv Oblast was reduced to seven, and the area of Kharkiv Raion was significantly expanded. One abolished raion, Derhachi Raion, as well as Liubotyn Municipality, part of Nova Vodolaha Raion, and the city of Kharkiv, which was previously incorporated as a city of oblast significance and did not belong to the raion, were merged into Kharkiv Raion. The January 2020 estimate of the population of the former Kharkiv Raion was 176,186 (2020 est.).

A raion (Ukrainian: район, romanized: raion; pl. райони, raiony), often translated as district, is the second-level administrative division in Ukraine. Raions were created in a 1922 administrative reform of the Soviet Union, to which Ukraine, as the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, belonged.

On 17 July 2020, the Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine's parliament) approved an administrative reform to merge most of the 490 raions, along with the "cities of regional significance", which were previously outside the raions, into just 136 reformed raions. Most tasks of the raions (education, healthcare, sport facilities, culture, and social welfare) were taken over by new hromadas, the subdivisions of raions. The 136 new districts include ten in Crimea, which have been de facto outside Ukrainian control since the start of the Russo-Ukrainian War in 2014.

Biliaivka Raion (Ukrainian: Біляївський район) was a raion (district) in Odesa Oblast of Ukraine. Its administrative center was the city of Biliaivka, which had a status of the city of oblast significance and did not belong to the raion. The raion was abolished and its territory was merged into Odesa Raion on 18 July 2020 as part of the administrative reform of Ukraine, which reduced the number of raions of Odesa Oblast to seven. According to the 2001 census, the majority of the population of Bileaiivka district was Ukrainian -speaking (80.26%), with Russian (16.87%) and Romanian (1.26%) speakers in the minority. The last estimate of the raion population was 81,171 (2020 est.).

Until 2016, the city of Biliaivka was part of Biliaivka Raion. On 28 January 2016, Biliaivka was designated the city of oblast significance, though it remained the center of the raion.

Podilsk Raion (Ukrainian: Подільський район; Romanian: Raionul Bârzula), known until 2015 as Kotovsk Raion (Ukrainian: Котовський район), is a raion (district) in Odesa Oblast of Ukraine. Its administrative center is the city of Podilsk. Population: 220,786 (2022 estimate).

On 18 July 2020, as part of the administrative reform of Ukraine, the number of raions of Odesa Oblast was reduced to seven, and the area of Podilsk Raion was significantly expanded. Six abolished raions, Ananiv, Balta, Kodyma, Liubashivka, Okny, and Savran Raions, as well as Balta Municipality and the city of Podilsk, which was previously incorporated as a city of oblast significance and did not belong to the raion, were merged into Podilsk Raion. The January 2020 estimate of the raion population was 25,524 (2020 est.).

Brianka (Ukrainian: Брянка, Russian: Брянка, romanized: Bryanka) is a city in Kadiivka urban hromada, Alchevsk Raion (district), Luhansk Oblast (region), Ukraine. It is located in the Donbas region, between the cities of Kadiivka and Alchevsk. Brianka is incorporated as a city of oblast significance. The population: 44,760 (2022 estimate), 47,512 (2013 est.).

Since 2014, Bryanka has been under the control of the Russian-backed Luhansk People's Republic (LPR/LNR). In 2022, Russia declared its annexation of the region.

Kirovsk (Ukrainian: Кіровськ; Russian: Кировск) or Holubivka (Ukrainian: Голубівка; Russian: Голубовка, romanized: Golubovka) is a city in Kadiivka urban hromada, Alchevsk Raion (district), Luhansk Oblast (region), Ukraine. It is incorporated as a city of oblast significance. Population: 26,654 (2022 estimate); 28,529 (2013 est.). It has been occupied by Russia and its proxy the Luhansk People's Republic since 2014.

Lysychansk (/ˌlɪsɪˈtʃænsk/ LISS-ih-CHANSK, /-ˈtʃɑːnsk/ -⁠CHAHNSK; Ukrainian: Лисичанськ, IPA: [lɪsɪˈtʃɑnʲsʲk] ; Russian: Лисичанск, romanized: Lisichansk, IPA: [lʲɪsʲɪˈtɕansk]) is a city in Sievierodonetsk Raion, Luhansk Oblast, eastern Ukraine. It is located on the high right bank of the Donets River, approximately 115 kilometres (71 mi) from the administrative center of the oblast, Luhansk. It faces Sievierodonetsk across the river. Its population before the Russian invasion of Ukraine was approximately 93,340 (2022 estimate).

Prior to Ukrainian 2020 municipal classification reforms, Lysychansk was incorporated as a city of oblast significance. Up to 2022, the administration of Lysychansk Municipality included the settlements of Novodruzhesk and Pryvillia. Along with the cities of Sievierodonetsk, Rubizhne, Kreminna and the nearest towns, the Lysychansk area constituted a major urban and industrial hub of the Donbas region, with a 2009 population of about 353,000.

Rovenky (Ukrainian: Ровеньки; Russian: Ровеньки, romanized: Rovenki) is a coal mining city in Rovenky Raion, Luhansk Oblast (region), Ukraine. Residence of Rovenky urban hromada. Prior to 2020, it was incorporated as a city of oblast significance. Population: 45,514 (2022 estimate); 47,852 (2013 est.). Including the surrounding villages, the total population is close to 84,000 (as of 2011).

Rovenky came under control of pro-Russian separatists in early 2014, and was incorporated into the Luhansk People's Republic (LPR). Since 2022, Russia has claimed the city as part of their LPR territory following its declared annexation of the region.

Rubizhne (Ukrainian: Рубіжне, IPA: [rʊˈbiʒne] ; Russian: Рубежное, romanized: Rubezhnoye, IPA: [rʊˈbʲeʐnəjə]) is a city in Luhansk Oblast, in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine. Situated on the left bank of the Donets River near the cities of Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk. Prior to 2020, it was a city of oblast significance, before the designation was abolished.

In 2014, at the start of the war in Donbas, Rubizhne was contested between Ukrainian and pro-Russian separatist forces. From mid-2014 until early 2022, the city was under control of Ukrainian forces. From early 2022 it has been under Russian control following their victory in the Battle of Rubizhne. Russia claimed Rubizhne as part of their Luhansk People's Republic since its annexation of the region in September 2022.
