It was formally created in July 2020 as part of the reform of administrative divisions of Ukraine. The center of the raion is in the town of Alchevsk. Population: 437,513 (2021 est.). The area of the raion is occupied by Russia, which continues to use the old, pre-2020 administrative divisions of Ukraine.

It is incorporated as a city of oblast significance. Population: 26,654 (2022 estimate); 28,529 (2013 est.). It has been occupied by Russia and its proxy the Luhansk People's Republic since 2014.

Alchevsk (Ukrainian: Алчевськ; Russian: Алчевск) is a city and the nominal administrative center of Alchevsk Raion in Luhansk Oblast, in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine. It is located 45 kilometres (28 miles) from the administrative center of the oblast, Luhansk. Population: 106,062 (2022 estimate).

Alchevsk is one of the largest industrial centers in the Donbas, and comprises a quarter of the entire oblast's production. Its economy depends on the companies of OJSC "Alchevsk Iron & Steel Works" (a trade blockade by Ukrainian activists during the war in Donbas has all but halted production of this plant in February 2017) and "Alchevsk Coke-Chemical Plant".

Brianka (Ukrainian: Брянка, Russian: Брянка, romanizedBryanka) is a city in Kadiivka urban hromada, Alchevsk Raion (district), Luhansk Oblast (region), Ukraine. It is located in the Donbas region, between the cities of Kadiivka and Alchevsk. Brianka is incorporated as a city of oblast significance. The population: 44,760 (2022 estimate), 47,512 (2013 est.).

Since 2014, Bryanka has been under the control of the Russian-backed Luhansk People's Republic (LPR/LNR). In 2022, Russia declared its annexation of the region.

Alchevsk Raion in the context of Kadiivka

Kadiivka (Ukrainian: Кадіївка) or Stakhanov (Russian: Стаханов), is a city in Alchevsk Raion, Luhansk Oblast, Donbas, eastern Ukraine. Residence of Kadiivka urban hromada. It is located on the Komyshuvakha River, a right tributary of the Luhan. On the decision of the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian parliament) the city was renamed back to Kadiivka in 2016. However, due to the Russian occupation of eastern Ukraine since early 2014, the Russian administration has kept the Soviet name of the city.

Following their 2022 annexation "referendum", Russia claimed the entire Luhansk Oblast, including Stakhanov (Kadiivka), as part of their Lugansk People's Republic (LPR / LNR). Kadiivka's population is approximately 73,248 (2022 estimate). Russia maintains the name Stakhanov, after the famous Soviet miner Alexei Stakhanov, and all city signage remains in the name of Stakhanov.
