Chemotroph in the context of Anaerobe

An anaerobic organism or anaerobe is any organism that does not require molecular oxygen for its growth. It may react negatively or even die in the presence of free oxygen. Anaerobic organisms do not use oxygen as a terminal electron acceptor in their respiration process to produce energy, but a less powerful oxidizing agent, such as nitrate, ferric ion, Mn(IV), sulfate or bicarbonate anions. In contrast, an aerobic organism (aerobe) is an organism that requires a sufficiently oxygenated environment to respire, produce its energy, and thrive. Because the anaerobic energy production was the first mechanism to be used by living microorganisms in their evolution and is much less efficient than the aerobic pathway, anaerobes are practically, de facto, always unicellular organisms (e.g. bacteria and archaea (prokaryotes), or protozoans (eukaryotes). However, a minuscule multicellular organism, with an exceptionally rare metabolism and surviving in a hypersaline brine pool in the darkness of the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, has been recently discovered. Meanwhile, it remains a scientific curiosity, as the much higher energy requirements of most multicellular organisms cannot be met by anaerobic respiration. Most fungi (eukaryotes) are obligate aerobes, requiring oxygen to survive and grow; however, some species, such as the Chytridiomycota that reside in the rumen of cattle, are obligate anaerobes; for these species, anaerobic respiration is used because oxygen would disrupt their metabolism or kill them. The deep seafloor and its underlying unconsolidated sediments ranks among the largest potential habitats for anaerobic microorganisms on Earth. Moreover, chemoautotroph microbes also thrive around hydrothermal vents, discharging hot water on the ocean seabed near mid-ocean ridges, where anaerobic conditions prevail. These microbes produce energy in the absence of sunlight or oxygen through a process called anaerobic respiration, whereby inorganic compounds and ions such as protons (H), elemental sulfur and its derivatives (SO2−4, S2O2−3), or ferric ions, are reduced to drive oxidative phosphorylation.

Chemotroph in the context of Mixotrophic

A mixotroph is an organism that uses a mix of different sources of energy and carbon, instead of having a single trophic mode. Mixotrophs are situated somewhere on the continuum from complete autotrophy to complete heterotrophy. It is estimated that mixotrophs comprise more than half of all microscopic plankton. There are two types of eukaryotic mixotrophs. There are those with their own chloroplasts – including those with endosymbionts providing the chloroplasts. And there are those that acquire them through kleptoplasty, or through symbiotic associations with prey, or through 'enslavement' of the prey's organelles.

Possible combinations include photo- and chemotrophy, besides litho- and organotrophy, the latter including osmotrophy, phagotrophy and myzocytosis. Mixotrophs can be either eukaryotic or prokaryotic. Mixotrophs can take advantage of different environmental conditions.

In biochemistry, chemosynthesis is the biological conversion of one or more carbon-containing molecules (usually carbon dioxide or methane) and nutrients into organic matter using the oxidation of inorganic compounds (e.g., hydrogen gas, hydrogen sulfide) or ferrous ions as a source of energy, rather than sunlight, as in photosynthesis. Chemoautotrophs, organisms that obtain carbon from carbon dioxide through chemosynthesis, are phylogenetically diverse. Groups that include conspicuous or biogeochemically important taxa include the sulfur-oxidizing Gammaproteobacteria, the Campylobacterota, the Aquificota, the methanogenic archaea, and the neutrophilic iron-oxidizing bacteria.

Many microorganisms in dark regions of the oceans use chemosynthesis to produce biomass from single-carbon molecules. Two categories can be distinguished. In the rare sites where hydrogen molecules (H2) are available, the energy available from the reaction between CO2 and H2 (leading to production of methane, CH4) can be large enough to drive the production of biomass. Alternatively, in most oceanic environments, energy for chemosynthesis derives from reactions in which substances such as hydrogen sulfide or ammonia are oxidized. This may occur with or without the presence of oxygen.

A heterotroph (/ˈhɛtərəˌtrf, -ˌtrɒf/; from Ancient Greek ἕτερος (héteros), meaning "other", and τροφή (trophḗ), meaning "nourishment") is an organism that cannot produce its own food, instead taking nutrition from other sources of organic carbon, mainly matter from other organisms. In the food chain, heterotrophs are primary, secondary and tertiary consumers, but not producers. Living organisms that are heterotrophic include most animals, all fungi, some bacteria and protists, and many parasitic plants. The term heterotroph arose in microbiology in 1946 as part of a classification of microorganisms based on their type of nutrition. The term is now used in many fields, such as ecology, in describing the food chain. Heterotrophs occupy the second and third trophic levels of the food chain while autotrophs occupy the first trophic level.

Heterotrophs may be subdivided according to their energy source. If the heterotroph uses chemical energy, it is a chemoheterotroph (e.g., humans and mushrooms). If it uses light for energy, then it is a photoheterotroph (e.g., haloquadratum walsbyi and green non-sulfur bacteria).

Saprotrophic nutrition /sæprəˈtrɒfɪk, -pr-/ or lysotrophic nutrition is a process of chemoheterotrophic extracellular digestion involved in the processing of decayed (dead or waste) organic matter. It occurs in saprotrophs (organisms which feed on decaying organic matter), and is most often associated with fungi (e.g. Mucor) and with soil bacteria. Saprotrophic microscopic fungi are sometimes called saprobes. Saprotrophic plants or bacterial flora are called saprophytes (sapro- 'rotten material' + -phyte 'plant'), although it is now believed that all plants previously thought to be saprotrophic are in fact parasites of microscopic fungi or of other plants. In fungi, the saprotrophic process is most often facilitated through the active transport of such materials through endocytosis within the internal mycelium and its constituent hyphae.

Various word roots relating to decayed matter (detritus, sapro-, lyso-), to eating and nutrition (-vore, -phage, -troph), and to plants or life forms (-phyte, -obe) produce various terms, such as detritivore, detritophage, saprotroph, saprophyte, saprophage, and saprobe; their meanings overlap, although technical distinctions (based on physiologic mechanisms) narrow the senses. For example, biologists can make usage distinctions based on macroscopic swallowing of detritus (as in earthworms) versus microscopic lysis of detritus (as with mushrooms).
