The place is recorded as Gurji-Boghazi (ბაαƒ₯αƒαƒ αƒ—αƒ•αƒ”αƒšαƒαƒ‘ αƒ§αƒ”αƒšαƒ˜) in the Description of the Kingdom of Georgia by 18th century, Georgian geographer Vakhushti Batonishvili.
