Thaksin Shinawatra (Thai: ทักษิณ ชินวัตร, RTGS: Thaksin Chinnawat [tʰák.sǐn tɕʰīn.nā.wát] ; born 26 July 1949) is a Thai former politician, businessman, and police officer who served as the 23rd prime minister of Thailand from 2001 until his overthrow in 2006. Since 2009 he has also been a citizen of Montenegro.

Thaksin founded the mobile phone operator Advanced Info Service (AIS) and the information technology and telecommunications conglomerate Shin Corporation in 1987, ultimately making him one of the richest people in Thailand. He founded the Thai Rak Thai Party (TRT) in 1998 and, after a landslide electoral victory, became prime minister in 2001. He was the first democratically elected prime minister of Thailand to serve a full term and was re-elected in 2005 by an overwhelming majority.

Yingluck Shinawatra (Thai: ยิ่งลักษณ์ ชินวัตร, RTGS: Yinglak Chinnawat, pronounced [jîŋ.lák tɕʰīn.nā.wát] ; born 21 June 1967) is a Thai businesswoman, politician and a member of the Pheu Thai Party who was the 28th prime minister of Thailand from 2011 to 2014. Yingluck was Thailand's first female prime minister and its youngest in over 60 years. She was removed from office on 7 May 2014 by a Constitutional Court decision.

Born in Chiang Mai Province into a wealthy family of Chinese descent, Yingluck Shinawatra earned a bachelor's degree from Chiang Mai University and a master's degree from Kentucky State University, both in public administration. She then became an executive in the businesses founded by her elder brother, Thaksin Shinawatra and later became the president of property developer SC Asset and managing director of Advanced Info Service. Thaksin served as prime minister from 2001 until 2006 when he was overthrown by a military coup. He fled abroad shortly before he was convicted in absentia of using his position to increase his own wealth. Thereafter, he lived in self-imposed exile to avoid serving his prison sentence until he returned to Thailand in August 2023.

Paetongtarn Shinawatra (born 21 August 1986) is a Thai politician and businesswoman who served as the 31st prime minister of Thailand from 2024 until her removal from office in 2025. She led the Pheu Thai Party from 2023 until her resignation in 2025.

Paetongtarn was born into the prominent Shinawatra family as the youngest child of the 23rd prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and niece of the 28th prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra. After graduating from Chulalongkorn University and the University of Surrey, she began a career in business before entering politics. In 2024, Paetongtarn became the youngest prime minister of Thailand and the second woman to hold the position, following her aunt. She has also served as Minister of Culture since 30 June 2025.

The Pheu Thai Party (PTP or PT) is a major populist political party in Thailand. It is the third incarnation of the Thai Rak Thai Party, a political party founded by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra in 1998. Like the previous incarnations, Pheu Thai is the main political vehicle for the Shinawatra family. It is currently the second largest party in the House of Representatives and has been in government as the majority leader in the ruling coalition since 2023.

The Pheu Thai Party was founded on 20 September 2007, as an anticipated replacement for the People's Power Party (PPP), which the Constitutional Court of Thailand dissolved less than three months later after finding party members guilty of electoral fraud. The People's Power Party was itself a replacement for Thaksin's original Thai Rak Thai Party (TRT), dissolved by the Court in May 2007 for violation of electoral laws.

Thaksin Shinawatra in the context of Bhumjaithai Party

Bhumjaithai Party (BJT; Thai: พรรคภูมิใจไทย, lit. 'Thai Pride Party') is a major conservative populist political party in Thailand. It was founded on 5 November 2008, in anticipation of the 2 December 2008 Constitutional Court ruling that dissolved its de facto predecessor, the Neutral Democratic Party (PMT), along with the People's Power Party (PPP) and the Thai Nation Party. After the dissolutions, former members of the PMT and the Friends of Newin (KPW) faction of the PPP, defected to this party. Currently, it is the party in the minority government.

Bhumjaithai has a populist platform, since some of the policies were drawn from Thaksin Shinawatra's populist Thai Rak Thai party and its second incarnation, the PPP. The party has a strong base in Buriram Province.
