The Taifa of Seville (Arabic: طائفة إشبيليّة Ta'ifat-u Ishbiliyyah) was an Arab kingdom which was ruled by the Abbadid dynasty. It was established in 1023 and lasted until 1091, in what is today southern Spain and Portugal. It gained independence from the Caliphate of Cordoba and it expanded the territory it ruled in the mid-11th century. The emerging power of Castile led Seville to ask military assistance from the Almoravids, who then occupied Seville.

St. Isidore's Basilica (Spanish: Basílica de San Isidoro) is a Catholic church in the city of León, Castile and León, Spain, located on the site of an ancient Roman temple. Its Christian roots can be traced back to the early 10th century when a monastery for Saint John the Baptist was erected on the grounds.

In 1063 the basilica was rededicated to Saint Isidore of Seville. Isidore was archbishop of Seville, and the most celebrated academic and theologian of Visigothic Spain in the period preceding the Arab invasions. With the agreement of Abbad II al-Mu'tadid, the Muslim ruler of Seville, Isidore's relics were brought to Leon where they could be interred on Christian soil. The tomb of the saint still draws many visitors today. An equestrian statue of Saint Isidore dressed as a Moor-slayer is visible, along with many other sculptures, high on the facade.

The Abbadid dynasty or Abbadids (Arabic: بنو عباد, romanizedBanū ʿAbbād) was an Arab dynasty from the tribe of Banu Lakhm of al-Hirah, which ruled the Taifa of Seville in al-Andalus following the fall of the Caliphate of Cordoba in 1031. After the collapse, they were the most powerful Taifa and before long absorbed most of the others. Abbadid rule lasted from about 1023 until 1091, but during the short period of its existence it exhibited singular energy and typified its time.

He was the final ruler of the Arab Abbadid dynasty of Seville, before being deposed by the Almoravids in 1091.

Shmuel ibn Naghrillah (Hebrew: שְׁמוּאֵל הַלֵּוִי בֶּן יוֹסֵף, romanizedŠəmuʿēl HalLēvi ben Yosēf; Arabic: أبو إسحاق إسماعيل بن النغريلة, romanizedʾAbū ʾIsḥāq ʾIsmāʿīl bin an-Naġrīlah), mainly known as Shmuel HaNagid (Hebrew: שמואל הנגיד, romanizedŠəmūʿel HanNāgid, lit.'Samuel the Prince') and Isma'il ibn Naghrilla (993–1056), was a Jewish statesman, military commander, scholar, linguist and poet in medieval al-Andalus. He served as grand vizier of the Taifa of Granada, commander of its army in battle, and leader of the local Jewish community. Rising to unprecedented prominence in both Muslim and Jewish spheres, he became one of the most powerful and influential Jews in medieval Spain. He is also considered one of the greatest Jewish poets of all time.

Raised in Córdoba in a Jewish merchant family, Samuel received a broad education in Jewish law, astronomy, logic, and biblical exegesis. Following unrest in Córdoba, he settled in Granada, where he entered government service and quickly rose in rank. He led Granada's forces in battles against Seville, Carmona, and Christian mercenaries. He was a respected halakhic authority, talmudist, and philanthropist, supporting Jewish academies in Babylonia and North Africa and leading a Jewish academy in Granada. His relationships extended to towering Jewish intellectuals such as Solomon Ibn Gabirol Nissim Gaon of Kairouan. He was involved in the Hebrew grammar debates of his time, opposing Jonah Ibn Janah, and contributed to the development of medieval Hebrew philology.
