Pacentro is a comune of 1,279 inhabitants of the province of L'Aquila in Abruzzo, Italy. It is a well-preserved historic medieval village located in central Italy, several kilometers from the City of Sulmona about 170 kilometres (110 mi) east of Rome. It is one of I Borghi più belli d'Italia ("The most beautiful villages of Italy").

The Aterno-Pescara (ancient Aternus from the Greek Aternos, Άτερνος) is a river system in Abruzzo, eastern central Italy. The river is known as the Aterno near its source in the mountains, but takes the name Pescara, actually a tributary, nearer the city of Pescara and the Adriatic Sea.

Having the greatest discharge basin of the rivers flowing into the Adriatic Sea south of the Reno, the Aterno has its origin in the Monti della Laga, near Montereale and Lago di Campotosto in the province of L'Aquila. The river flows in a southeastern direction past Pizzoli, L'Aquila, Paganica, San Demetrio ne' Vestini, and Castelvecchio Subequo through the Appennino Abruzzese mountains. It subsequently flows until the Valle Peligna (or Sulmona plateau) near Raiano, where it curves northward and receives its main tributary, the Sagittario. Later, near Popoli, it crosses the border into the province of Pescara and joins with the short, but large volumed, Pescara, by which name it is thenceforth usually known. The river flows in a northeast direction past Tocco da Casauria and Torre de' Passeri before forming the border between the province of Pescara and the province of Chieti for a short distance. It flows into the Adriatic Sea at the city of Pescara.

Abruzzo (US: /ɑːˈbruːtsoʊ, əˈ-/, UK: /æˈbrʊtsoʊ/, Italian: [aˈbruttso]; Abruzzese Neapolitan: Abbrùzze [abˈbruttsə], Abbrìzze [abˈbrittsə], or Abbrèzze [abˈbrɛttsə]; Aquilano: Abbrùzzu), historically also known as Abruzzi, is a region of Southern Italy. It has an area of 10,831.84 square kilometres (4,182.20 sq mi) and a population of nearly 1.3 million. It is divided into four provinces: L'Aquila, Teramo, Pescara, and Chieti. Its western border, shared with Lazio, lies 80 km (50 mi) east of Rome. L'Aquila is both the capital city of the Abruzzo region and of the Province of L'Aquila, and is the second largest city. The other provincial capitals are Pescara, which is Abruzzo's largest city and major port, Teramo, and Chieti. Other large cities and towns in Abruzzo include the industrial and high tech center Avezzano, as well as three important industrial and touristic centers, Vasto, Lanciano, and Sulmona.

Abruzzo borders the region of Marche to the north, Lazio to the west and northwest, Molise to the south, and the Adriatic Sea to the east. Geographically, Abruzzo is divided into a mountainous area in the west, which includes the highest massifs of the Apennines, such as the Gran Sasso d'Italia and the Maiella, and a coastal area in the east, with beaches on the Adriatic Sea.

Marsica is a geographical and historical region in Abruzzo, central Italy, including 37 comuni in the province of L'Aquila. It is located between the plain of the former Fucine Lake, the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, the plain of Carsoli and the valley of Sulmona.

The area takes its name from the Marsi, an Osco-Umbrian Italic people, and then from the Latin adjective marsicus. In the center of the area there is the Fucino former lake, dried up in 1877, surrounded by parks and nature reserves. Avezzano is the most populous city of the territory. Marsica has about 130,000 inhabitants as of 2019.

The Valle Peligna, also known as Conca di Sulmona, is a plateau in central Abruzzo, southern Italy, included in the province of L'Aquila. It has a surface of some 100 km.

The valley takes its name from the Paeligni. In prehistoric times, it was occupied by a lake which disappeared after a series of earthquakes approximately 300,000 years ago, leaving the land full of marshes but fertile. The former barrier between the lake and the sea was in what are now the gorges of Popoli. Three hills near Sulmona are the relics of the single island in the lake.

The Sagittario is a river in Italy. It is located primarily in the province of L'Aquila in the Abruzzo region of southern Italy. The river is the main tributary of the Aterno-Pescara. Its source is located near Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise and Scanno. The river flows into Lago di Scanno near Scanno and flows out of the lake near Villalago. The portion of the river that enters the lake is known as the Tasso. The Sagittario flows north through the Appennino Abruzzese near Villalago, Bugnara, Sulmona and Pratola Peligna. It enters the Aterno-Pescara near Raiano and Popoli on the border with the province of Pescara.

In Greek mythology, Solymus or Solymos (Ancient Greek: Σολύμου) may refer to two individuals:

• Solymus, an ancestral hero and eponym of the Solymi, who inhabited Milyas (i.e the area around Solyma), in south-west Anatolia. He was a son of either Ares and Caldene, daughter of Pisidus (probably the eponym of Pisidia), or of Zeus and Chaldene, Calchedonia or Chalcea "the nymph". Solymus was said to have married his own sister Milye, also a local eponymous heroine. Milye's second husband was named Cragus, presumed eponym of the city Cragus or Mount Cragus. It is unclear whether the name Solymus was derived from a mountain by the same name (now known as Güllük Dağ) in Anatolia, or vice versa.
