A satellite city or satellite town is a smaller municipality or settlement that is part of (or on the edge of) a larger metropolitan area and serves as a regional population and employment center. It differs from mere suburbs, subdivisions and especially bedroom communities in that it has employment bases sufficient to support its residential population, and conceptually, could be a self-sufficient community outside of its larger metropolitan area. However, it functions as part of a metropolis and experiences high levels of cross-commuting (that is, residents commuting out of and employees commuting into the city).

The Jakarta metropolitan area or Greater Jakarta, known locally as Jabodetabek (acronym of Jakarta–Bogor–Depok–Tangerang–Bekasi), or less commonly as Jabodetabekpunjur which includes Puncak region of Bogor Regency and portions of Cianjur Regency, is the most populous megapolitan area in Indonesia. It includes the national capital (Jakarta Special Capital Region, as the core city) as well as five satellite cities and three complete regencies.
The original term "Jabotabek" dated from the late 1970s and was revised to "Jabodetabek" in 1999 when "De" (for "Depok") was inserted into the name following its formation. The term "Jabodetabekjur" or "Jabodetabekpunjur" was legalised on the Presidential Regulation Number 54 of 2008, and then the name "Jabodetabekpunjur" became officially used; however, this extension to include part of Cianjur Regency is not included in the figures below.

Satellite cities in the context of Largest cities in Indonesia
This is a list of all the 95 cities (with regency-level status) in Indonesia, ranked by population. It excludes urban-characterized settlements such as regency seats, which does not have city status. Indonesia has 93 cities classified as kota (city), one provincial-level capital city (Nusantara), and one provincial-level special city (the Special Capital Region of Jakarta). Population figures are taken from the 2020 census and the more recent official estimates as at mid 2024, all by Statistics Indonesia (BPS).
Jakarta is the largest city and the only megacity in Indonesia, with a population of 10.70 million. As a primate city, Jakarta is nearly four times larger than the second largest city Surabaya. Jakarta, along with Capital City of Nusantara, are unique compared to other cities in Indonesia, since they are technically provinces with a city management. Jakarta is subdivided into five administrative cities and an administrative regency, which are not self-governed (without municipal council nor government budget). Each of Jakarta's five satellite cities also have passed the one million mark in population, with the largest one being Bekasi, while the others are Depok, Tangerang, South Tangerang and Bogor.
