⭐ Core Definition: Rugova Canyon

Rugova Canyon (Albanian: Kanioni i Rugovës; Serbian: Руговска клисура, Rugovska klisura) or Rugova Gorge (Albanian: Gryka e Rugovës) is a river canyon near Peja in western Kosovo. The canyon is located in the Albanian Alps, close to the border with Montenegro.

Rugova Canyon offers great opportunities for hikers, rock-climbers and cave explorers. A "Via Ferrata", called the "Iron Trail", has been built. It is the first and the only one in the Balkans and enables hikers to climb rocks. The Patriarchate of Peja, the historical and spiritual seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church, is located at the entrance of the canyon.

The mountains of Kosovo mainly consist of the Accursed Mountains in the west, the Šar Mountains in the south and the Kopaonik Mountains in the northeast. The Accursed Mountains and the Šar Mountains both are home to the highest peaks in Kosovo rising well over 2,500 m (8,202 ft), while Kopaonik mountains raise to a maximum of 2,017 m (6,617 ft).

The mountains have some special landscapes like the Rugova Canyon and the Kaçanik Gorge. There are alpine and glacial lakes located in most of the mountains.

Rugova Canyon in the context of Žljeb mountain

Žljeb (Albanian: Zhleb; Montenegrin: Жљеб) is a mountain located between western Kosovo and the Rožaje Municipality of eastern Montenegro. It is a part of the Accursed Mountains, located between the mountains of Hajla and Mokna. The majority of the land within the mountain belongs to Kosovo, while a minority of it belongs to Montenegro. The White Drin river originates from within the mountain.

The Žljeb mountain also forms part of the eastern side of the Rugova Canyon. It also has two high and impressive peaks: the higher is called Rusulija (Albanian: Ruselia/Rusulisë) and is 2,382 m (7,815 ft) high, while the lower is simply called Zhlebit, at 2,365 m (7,759 ft). Rusulija's slopes are covered with rich forests and near the summit there are several meadows. The road from the city of Rožaje to Peja is located within the foothills of the mountains, and also contains 2 or 3 villages within that road. It also contains the border crossings between Montenegro and Kosovo, the Montenegrin one is called "Kula/Kulla".

Rugova Canyon in the context of Hajla

Hajla (Albanian: Hajlë or Hajla; Serbian Cyrillic: Хајла) is a mountain located between the borders of Kosovo and Montenegro. It has several peaks that reach over 2,000 m (6,562 ft), the tallest with a hight of 2,403 m (7,884 ft). The northern slopes contains the spring formation of the Ibar river, and to its southern slopes is the origin of the Bistrica e Pejës (or the Pećka Bistrica) river. Hajla is also the tallest mountain in the northern part of the Accursed Mountains of the Balkans. In Kosovo, Hajla forms part of the 25 km (16 mi) long Rugova Canyon. The closest city to Hajla is Rožaje, in Montenegro.
