Regions of Uzbekistan in the context of "Surxondaryo Region"

Uzbekistan is a country in Central Asia, located north of Turkmenistan and Afghanistan. With an area of approximately 448,900 square kilometers, Uzbekistan stretches 1,425 km (885 mi) from west to east and 930 km (580 mi) from north to south. It borders Turkmenistan to the southwest, Kazakhstan to the north and Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to the south and east. Uzbekistan also has four small exclaves in Kyrgyzstan.

Uzbekistan is the only Central Asian state to border all of the other four. Uzbekistan also shares a short border with Afghanistan to the south. As the Caspian Sea is an inland sea with no direct link to the oceans, Uzbekistan is one of only two "doubly landlocked" countries—countries completely surrounded by other landlocked countries. The other is Liechtenstein.

Samarkand Region is the most populous region of Uzbekistan. It is located in the center of the country in the basin of the Zarafshan River. It borders Tajikistan, Navoiy Region, Jizzakh Region and Qashqadaryo Region. It covers an area of 16,773 km. The population is estimated to be around 4,031,324, with some 63% living in rural areas (as of 2022).

Samarkand Region was established on 15 January 1938, and is divided into 14 administrative districts and two district-level cities. The capital is Samarkand (pop. ≈551,700 as of 2021). Other major towns include Bulungʻur, Juma, Ishtixon, Kattakurgan, Urgut, and Oqtosh.

Andijan Region is a region of Uzbekistan, located in the eastern part of the Fergana Valley in far eastern Uzbekistan. It borders with Kyrgyzstan (Jalal-Abad and Osh Regions), Fergana Region and Namangan Region. It covers an area of 4,300 km. The population is estimated to be around 3,253,528 as of 2022, thus making Andijan Region the most densely populated region of Uzbekistan.

The origin of the name of the place is uncertain. Arab geographers of the 10th century referred to Andijan as "Andukan," "Andugan," or "Andigan." Some historians link the name of the place to the Turkic tribal names Andi and Adoq/Azoq.The traditional etymology connects the name with the Turkic ethnonym Gandhi (Gandhi Turks), known from pre-Islamic period.

Fergana Region is one of the regions of Uzbekistan, located in the southern part of the Fergana Valley in the far east of the country. It borders the Namangan and Andijan Regions of Uzbekistan, as well as Kyrgyzstan (Batken and Osh Regions) and Tajikistan (Sughd Region). Its capital is the city of Fergana. It covers an area of 6,760 km. The population is approximately 4,014,895 as of 2023, with 45% of the population living in rural areas.

Bukhara Region is a region of Uzbekistan located in the southwest of the country. The Kyzyl Kum desert takes up a large portion of its territory. It borders Turkmenistan, Navoiy Region, Qashqadaryo Region, a small part of the Xorazm Region, and the Karakalpakstan Republic. It covers an area of 40,216 km. The population is estimated at 1,976,823 (as of 2022), with 63% living in rural areas.

Buxoro Region is divided into 11 administrative districts and two district-level cities. The capital is Bukhara, with a population of around 284,100 (as of 2021). Other major towns include Olot, Qorakoʻl (Karakul), Galaosiyo, Gazli, Gʻijduvon (pop. ~40,600, as of late 2005), Kogon (pop. ~62,300, as of 2021), Romitan, Shofirkon, and Vobkent.
