Nuremberg (/ˈnjʊərəmbɜːrɡ/, NURE-əm-burg; German: Nürnberg [ˈnʏʁnbɛʁk] ; in the local East Franconian dialect: Nämberch [ˈnɛmbɛrç]) is the largest city in Franconia and the second-largest city in the German state of Bavaria. Its 544,414 (2023) inhabitants make it the 14th-largest city in Germany.

Nuremberg sits on the Pegnitz, which carries the name Regnitz from its confluence with the Rednitz in Fürth onwards (Pegnitz→ Regnitz→ Main→ Rhine→ North Sea), and on the Rhine–Main–Danube Canal, that connects the North Sea to the Black Sea. Lying in the Bavarian administrative region of Middle Franconia, it is the largest city and unofficial capital of the entire cultural region of Franconia. The city is surrounded on three sides by the Nürnberger Reichswald [de], a large forest, and in the north lies Knoblauchsland [de] (garlic land), an extensive vegetable growing area and cultural landscape.

Schwabach (German pronunciation: [ˈʃvaːbax] ) is a German city of about 40,000 inhabitants near Nuremberg in the centre of the region of Franconia in the north of Bavaria. Together with the neighboring cities of Nuremberg, Fürth and Erlangen, Schwabach forms one of the three metropolitan areas in Bavaria. The city is an autonomous administrative district (kreisfreie Stadt). Schwabach is also the name of the river which runs through the city prior to joining the Rednitz.

Schwabach is famous for its crafts made of gold, particularly gold foil. In 2004, Schwabach celebrated this tradition with an anniversary festival, marking "500 years gold foil in Schwabach".

The Pegnitz (German: [ˈpeːɡnɪts] ) is a river in Franconia in the German state of Bavaria.

The Pegnitz has its source in the town of the same name at an altitude of 425 m (1,394 ft) and meets the Rednitz at 283 m (928 ft) in Fürth to form the Regnitz river. Shortly after the source, the Pegnitz unites with the 15 km (9.3 mi) long Fichtenohe while keeping the name of the shorter tributary. Some therefore consider the Fichtenohe as the upper course of the river Pegnitz. The source of the Fichtenohe is in Lindenhardt Forest (Landkreis Bayreuth) north of the town of Pegnitz.

The Franconian Rezat (German: Fränkische Rezat, pronounced [ˈfʁɛŋkɪʃə ˈʁɛtsat]) is a 77-kilometre-long (48 mi) river in southern Germany. It is the western, left source river of the Rednitz. It rises in the Franconian Heights near Oberdachstetten. It flows generally east through the towns Lehrberg, Ansbach, Windsbach and Spalt. Together with the Swabian Rezat (Schwäbische Rezat), it forms the Rednitz in Georgensgmünd.
