Municipalities of Denmark in the context of "Region Zealand"

The Finger Plan (Danish: Fingerplanen) is an urban plan from 1947 which provides a strategy for the development of the Copenhagen metropolitan area, Denmark. According to the plan, Copenhagen is to develop along five 'fingers', centred on S-train commuter rail lines, which extend from the 'palm', that is the dense urban fabric of central Copenhagen. In between the fingers, green "wedges" are intended to provide land for agriculture and recreational purposes.

By the definition in the Finger Plan the metropolitan area has a population of 2,036,717 (as of 1 January 2017) and an area of 3,030 km (1,170 sq mi) over 34 municipalities.

Helsingør Municipality (a variant English name: Elsinore Municipality; Danish: Helsingør Kommune), is a municipality in the Capital Region on the northeast coast of the island of Zealand (Sjælland) in eastern Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 121.6 km, and has a total population of 63,953 (1. January 2025). Its mayor as of 1 January 2014 is Benedikte Kiær, a member of the Conservative political party.

Fredericia Municipality (Danish: Fredericia Kommune) is a kommune on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula in south-central Denmark. It belongs to the Region of Southern Denmark, covers an area of 134.46 km, and has a total population of 52,616 (2025). The Mayor is Steen Wrist, representing the Social Democrats political party.

The municipality's main town and the site of its municipal council is the city of Fredericia.

Vejle (Danish pronunciation: [ˈvɑjlə]) is a city in Denmark, in the southeast of the Jutland Peninsula at the head of Vejle Fjord, where the Vejle River and Grejs River and their valleys converge. It is the site of the councils of Vejle Municipality (kommune) and the Region of Southern Denmark. The city has a population of 62,011 (As of January 1. 2025), making it the ninth largest city in Denmark. Vejle Municipality has a population of 122,433 (as of January 2025), making it the fifth most populous municipality in Denmark. The city is part of the Triangle Region, which includes the neighbouring cities of Kolding and Fredericia. Vejle is located 110 kilometres (68 miles) north of Germany, 70 kilometres (43,5 miles) from Aarhus and 240 kilometres (149 miles) from the capital Copenhagen.

Vejle is most known for its forested hills, Vejle fjord, harbour, shopping, pedestrian mall, windmill and an astonishing architecture near the harbour.

Rudersdal Municipality (Danish: Rudersdal Kommune) is a part suburban, part rural municipality (Danish, kommune) located on the northern outskirts of Copenhagen, Denmark. It covers an area of 73 km² and has a population of 57,342 (1. January 2025). The distance from Copenhagen City Hall Square is approximately 20 km. The western part of the municipality is served by the Hillerød radial of the S-train network while the eastern part is served by the Coast Line. Administratively Rudersdal Municipality belongs to Region Hovedstaden.

On 1 January 2007 Rudersdal municipality was created as the result of 2007 Danish Municipal Reform, consisting of the former municipalities of Søllerød and Birkerød.

The five regions of Denmark (Danish: regioner) were created as administrative entities at a level above the municipalities and below the central government in the public sector as part of the 2007 Danish Municipal Reform, when the 13 counties (amter) were abolished. At the same time, the number of municipalities (kommuner) was cut from 270 (from 271 in 2006) to 98. The reform was approved and made into a law by the lawmakers in the Folketing 26 June 2005 with elections to the 98 municipalities and 5 regions being held Tuesday 15 November 2005.

Each of the five regions is governed by a popularly elected regional council with 41 members, from whom the regional chairperson is chosen. This is 205 members in total. The number of regions will be reduced to four from 1 January 2027. The number of council members elected will change to between 25 and 47 in the 2025 Danish local elections for a total of 134 in the four regional councils that will then be elected.

This is a list of current Municipalities of Denmark. The number of municipalities was reduced from 270 to the current 98 on Monday 1 January 2007. The archipelago of Ertholmene is not part of any municipality or region but is administered by the Ministry of Defence. Area of municipalities includes water, which can make up a significant part of the total area of a municipality, i.e. Furesø and Halsnæs.

Ærø Municipality (Danish: Ærø Kommune) is a kommune occupying the 88 km island of Ærø in Denmark in the Region of Southern Denmark as of 1 January 2007, and in 2006 in Funen County. The municipality also encompasses Birkholm and the uninhabited islands Lilleø, Dejrø and Halmø.

The first mayor of Ærø (2006–09;2014–17) was Jørgen Otto Jørgensen (born 21 December 1950, Marstal) a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party, until 2005 mayor of Ærøskøbing Municipality. As of 1 January 2022 the mayor is Peter Hansted (born 12 January 1956, Lyngby) representing the Social Democrats. The most populous town is Marstal and the seat of the municipal council is Ærøskøbing.

The Central Denmark Region (Danish: Region Midtjylland), or more directly translated as the Central Jutland Region and sometimes simply Mid-Jutland, is an administrative region of Denmark established on 1 January 2007 as part of the 2007 Danish municipal reform. The reform abolished the traditional counties (amter) and replaced them with five new administrative regions. At the same time, smaller municipalities were merged into larger units, cutting the total number of municipalities from 271 to 98. The reform diminished the power of the regional level dramatically in favour of the local level and the national government in Copenhagen. The Central Denmark Region comprises 19 municipalities.
