Lošinj (pronounced [lɔ̌ʃiːɲ]; Italian: Lussino; Venetian: Lusin, earlier Osero; German: Lötzing; Latin: Apsorrus; Ancient Greek: Ἄψωρος) is a Croatian island in the northern Adriatic Sea, in the Kvarner Gulf. It is almost due south of the city of Rijeka and part of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. The settlements on Lošinj include Nerezine, Sveti Jakov, Ćunski, Artatore, Mali Lošinj and Veli Lošinj. A regional road runs the length of the island; ferry connections (via the island of Cres) include Brestova - Porozina, Merag - Valbiska, Mali Lošinj - Zadar and Mali Lošinj - Pula. Its center is Rijeka. The county's population was 296,195 at the 2011 census.

The Kvarner Gulf (Croatian: Kvarnerski zaljev, Italian: Golfo del Quarnero or Carnaro; Venetian: Golfo del Carnaro; Latin: Sinus Flanaticus or Liburnicus sinus) sometimes also Kvarner Bay, is a bay in the northern Adriatic Sea, located between the Istrian peninsula and the northern Croatian Littoral mainland. The bay is a part of Croatia's internal waters.
The largest islands within the Kvarner are Cres, Krk, Pag, Rab and Lošinj. A portion of the Kvarner Bay, located between Cres, Krk, Rab and Pag is also called Kvarnerić (literally "little Kvarner"; Italian: Golfo del Quarnerolo or Carnerolo), and the portion east of Krk and Rab is called Senj Channel (after the mainland town of Senj).

Absyrtides or Apsyrtides or Apsirtides (Ancient Greek: Ἀψυρτίδες; Italian: Arcipelago delle Absirtidi) was a collective name of two islands off the coast of Illyricum – Cres (Cherso in Italian) and Lošinj (Lussino in Italian), which were almost attached.
The islands were named after Absyrtus, who according to one tradition, was slain here by his sister Medea and by Jason, while according to another story because his dead body was drawn by the waves to the islands.
