Lemgo (German pronunciation: [ˈlɛmɡoː] ; Low German: Lemge, Lemje) is a university and old Hanseatic town in the Lippe district of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

It is situated between the Teutoburg Forest and the Weser Uplands, 25 km east of Bielefeld and 70 km west of Hannover.

The Detmold Open-air Museum (German: LWL-Freilichtmuseum Detmold – Westfälisches Landesmuseum für Volkskunde; English: "LWL Open-air Museum Detmold – Westphalian State Museum for Folkloristics") is a museum at Detmold in the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It was founded, together with the Hagen Open-air Museum, in 1960, and was first opened to the public in the early 1970s. The museum is run by the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe [de] (LWL, regional authority for Westphalia and Lippe within North Rhine-Westphalia).

Ostwestfalen-Lippe ([ˌɔstvɛstfaːlənˈlɪpə] , literally East(ern) Westphalia-Lippe, abbreviation OWL) is the eastern region of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, congruent with the administrative region of Detmold and containing the eastern part of Westphalia, joined with the Lippe region. The region has a population of about two million inhabitants. The region includes the cities of Bielefeld, Paderborn and Gütersloh, and the major towns of Minden, Detmold and Herford. The Teutoburg Forest and the Egge Hills stretch across the region and form the frontier to the Westphalian Lowland. Eastern Westphalia–Lippe is one of the supposed regions of the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in the year 9 AD, where an alliance of Germanic tribes defeated a Roman army. In 1875, a statue was unveiled of the commander Arminius, who led the Germans to victory at the battle. This statue, the Hermannsdenkmal, is one of the best-known sights and landmarks in Ostwestfalen-Lippe.

Regierungsbezirk Detmold (German pronunciation: [ˈdɛtmɔlt]) is one of the five Regierungsbezirke of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, located in the north-east of the state. It is congruent with the (cultural) region of Ostwestfalen-Lippe (OWL, East Westphalia–Lippe).

The Regierungsbezirk was created in 1947 when the former state of Lippe was incorporated into North Rhine-Westphalia by merging the former Regierungsbezirk Minden with the territory of the Free State of Lippe. The Regierungsbezirk Minden dates back to 1815, when the class of administrative regions Regierungsbezirke was initially created.
