Laleham in the context of "Staines-upon-Thames"

Spelthorne is a local government district with borough status in Surrey, England. Its council is based in Staines-upon-Thames; other settlements in the area include Ashford, Sunbury-on-Thames, Shepperton, Stanwell and Laleham. It is named after the medieval Spelthorne Hundred which had covered the area.

The borough is largely urban; although outside the boundaries of Greater London, it is almost entirely inside the M25 motorway which encircles London. The borough contains several large reservoirs, including the Wraysbury Reservoir, Staines Reservoirs and Queen Mary Reservoir, which all supply fresh water to London and surrounding areas.

Penton Hook Lock is the sixth lowest lock of forty four on the non-tidal reaches of the River Thames in England. It faces an island which was until its construction a pronounced meander (a hook) and is on the site of its seasonal cutoff. It is against the left bank marking the church parish medieval border of Laleham and Staines upon Thames in Surrey for many centuries. Until 1965 their county was Middlesex. At 266 ft (81 m) it is the third longest lock on the river.

A bend 1000 yards (900 metres) upstream of the lock, Silvery Sands, hosts Staines Regatta in the sport of rowing annually. On the opposite bank in Thorpe is Penton Hook Marina which occupies lakes once land used for gravel extraction.

Spelthorne was a hundred (dated subdivision) of the historic county of Middlesex, England. It contained these parishes and settlements:

  • The hamlet of Upper Halliford, today a village, joined postally with Shepperton
  • The hamlet of Charlton, joined postally with Shepperton

  • Part of the neighbourhood of Fulwell, once a single-ownership estate, by consensus spreading south to around to its railway station

The present-day district of Spelthorne in Surrey amounts to about 59% of the hundred. The eastern parts since 1965 form parts of the London boroughs of Hounslow and Richmond upon Thames.
