It was created on 1 January 1981 from the districts (Kreise) of Giessen, Lahn-Dill and Limburg-Weilburg and the Vogelsbergkreis, all formerly belonging to Darmstadt, and Marburg-Biedenkopf, formerly belonging to Kassel.
