Kristianstad County (Swedish: Kristianstads län) was a county of Sweden from 1719 to 31 December 1996 when it was merged with Malmöhus County to form Skåne County.

Region Skåne is the regional council of Skåne County in Scania, Sweden. Region Skåne was formed on 1 January 1999 by the amalgamation of the county councils of Malmöhus County and Kristianstad County and some of the tasks handled by Malmö Municipality.

The present county was created in 1997 when Kristianstad County and Malmöhus County were merged; it covers around 3% of Sweden's total area, while its population of 1.3 million comprises 13% of Sweden's total population.
Malmöhus County (Swedish: Malmöhus län) was a county of Sweden from 1719 to 1996. On 1 January 1997 it was merged with Kristianstad County to form Skåne County. It had been named after Malmöhus, a castle in Malmö, which was also where the governor originally lived.

Bengt Holgersson (born September 16, 1941) was the first Governor of Skåne County after a merger of Malmöhus County and Kristianstad County in 1997. Holgersson was involved in a corruption scandal in April 2006. Both Holgersson and municipal commissioner Ilmar Reepalu were tried for corruption regarding a trip to South Africa which they had accepted from Sigma AB. In the end Both Holgersson and Reepalu were acquitted. In 2006 he was succeeded by Göran Tunhammar as Governor of Skåne.
