Thái Bình was a former coastal eastern province in the Red River Delta region of northern Vietnam. Its name is chữ Hán (太平) for "great peace." It is about 18 km from Nam Định, 70 km from Haiphong, and 110 km from Hanoi. As of April 2024, it had a population 1,888,184.

On June 12, 2025 the decision was made to subsume Thái Bình into Hưng Yên province.

Hưng Yên province in the context of Thái Bình river system

The Thái Bình river system is one of the two major river systems in the Red River Delta, Vietnam; the other one is the Red River system. Both split from the Red River in the Hưng Yên province. The system consists of 8 rivers flowing in northern Vietnam. This system joining with Red River system creates the Red River Delta.

The part of it between Hưng Yên and the sea, in combination with the part of the Red River from Hanoi to Hưng Yên, was called the River of Tonkin by historical Dutch and English texts.

Hưng Yên province in the context of Tô Lâm

Tô Lâm (Vietnamese: [to ləm] ; born 10 July 1957) is a Vietnamese politician and former police officer who has served as the general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) since August 2024 and the 13th president of Vietnam from May 2024 to October 2024. In his capacity as general secretary, he is the most powerful person in Vietnam's political system. A career officer in the People's Public Security Forces for over 40 years, Lâm previously served as Minister of Public Security from 2016 until his election to the presidency in 2024.

Born in Hưng Yên province, Tô Lâm became a member of the CPV on 22 August 1981. A graduate of the Central Police School and the Vietnam People's Security Academy, his entire career has been in the police forces. He holds the rank of four-star General in the Vietnam People's Public Security. He previously served as Head of the Central Highlands Steering Committee, Deputy Minister of Public Security, and Director-General of the MPS First General Department of Security. He has been a Member of the CPV Central Committee since 2011 and a Member of the CPV Politburo since 2016.

Bắc Ninh (Vietnamese pronunciation: [ɓɐ̌k nīɲ]) is a province of Vietnam, located in the Northern Midlands and Mountains of the Northern part of the country. It is situated to the East of the nation's capital, Hanoi, and borders Hải Phòng city, Hưng Yên province, Lạng Sơn province, Thái Nguyên province.

The province covers an area of 822.71 km (317.65 mi) and as of 2022 it had a population of 1.488.250. It comprises 2 cities, 2 towns, and 4 districts. Bắc Ninh was ranked eighth in Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) and third in per capita GRDP among Vietnamese administrative units. The GRDP reached 248.376 trillion Vietnamese Đồng (equivalent to over 10.8 billion USD), with a per capita GRDP of 7,250 USD (equivalent to 167 million Đồng), and a GRDP growth rate of 7.39% in 2022.
