Far North Queensland (FNQ) is the northernmost part of the Australian state of Queensland (QLD). Its largest city is Cairns and it is dominated geographically by Cape York Peninsula, which stretches north to the Torres Strait, and west to the Gulf Country. The waters of Torres Strait include the only international border in the area contiguous with the Australian mainland, between Australia and Papua New Guinea.

The region is home to three World Heritage Sites, the Great Barrier Reef, the Wet Tropics of Queensland and Riversleigh, Australia's largest fossil mammal site. Far North Queensland lays claim to over 70 national parks, including Mount Bartle Frere; with a peak of 1,622 metres (5,322 ft) it is the highest peak in both Northern Australia and Queensland.

Gulf Country in the context of Norman River

The Norman River is a river in the Gulf Country, Queensland, Australia. The river originates in the Gregory Range, 200 kilometres (120 mi) southeast of Croydon and flows 420 kilometres (260 mi) northwest to the Gulf of Carpentaria. It is joined by three major tributaries, the Carron, Clara and Yappar Rivers. The river flows through Normanton before entering the Gulf of Carpentaria through the major fishing port of Karumba. The mouth of the river lies in the Gulf Plains Important Bird Area.

The record flood of the river occurred in 1974, cresting at 8.8 metres (29 ft) in Normanton and causing the inundation of the town. The river's catchment area covers 50,445 square kilometres (19,477 sq mi).

Central West Queensland (abbreviated CWQ) is a remote region in the Australian state of Queensland which covers 396,650.2 km. The region lies to the north of South West Queensland and south of the Gulf Country. It has a population of approximately 12,387 people. As of 2018, it is one of 16 Aged Care Planning Regions (ACPR) in Queensland.
