Garrotxa (Catalan pronunciation: [ɡəˈrɔtʃə]) is a comarca (county) in the Girona region, Catalonia, Spain. Its population in 2016 was 55,999, more than half of them in the capital city of Olot. It is roughly equivalent to the historical County of Besalú.

Located by the border with Northern Catalonia in France, the region includes the counties of Gironès, Alt Empordà, Baix Empordà, Garrotxa, Pla de l'Estany, Ripollès and Selva. Within Catalonia, it borders Alt Pirineu to the west, Central Catalonia to the south-west and Barcelona to the south.

Ripollès (Catalan pronunciation: [ripuˈʎɛs]; Spanish: Ripollés) is a comarca (county) in the Girona region, Catalonia, Spain. It is located in the Ribes and Camprodon river valleys. In 2001, its population was 25,744, about 40% of whom lived in the capital, Ripoll.
Ripollès borders the comarques of Baixa Cerdanya, Berguedà, Lluçanès, Osona, Garrotxa, and – across the border in France – Vallespir, Conflent, and Alta Cerdanya.

The Catalan Transversal Range (Serralada Transversal) is a system of minor mountain ranges at the eastern end of the Pre-Pyrenees, between the Osona and Garrotxa comarques. The existence of the Catalan Transversal Range has made communications in the northern areas of Catalonia difficult in the past, especially between Northeastern Catalonia (Catalan Coastal Depression, with cities like Girona, Figueres and La Jonquera) and Western Catalonia (Catalan Mediterranean System; Lleida, Cervera and further west to Aragón), a problem that has been partly solved with the development of the Eix Transversal.

As of 2008, more than half of the comarca's 175,148 inhabitants live in the capital, Girona, which is also the capital of the Girona region and Spanish province.

Olot (Catalan: [uˈlɔt] ; Spanish: [oˈlot] ) is the capital city of the comarca of Garrotxa, in the Province of Girona, Catalonia, Spain. The city is known for its natural landscape, including four volcanoes scattered around the city center. The municipality is part of the Zona Volcànica de la Garrotxa Natural Park. Olot is also well known for its cultural activity, with historical art movements like Olot school or factories of religious imagery, which contributed to the location in the city of the main Design and Arts & Crafts school of the province of Girona, the Escola d'Art i Superior de Disseny d'Olot.
Between 1911 and 1969, Olot was linked to Girona by the narrow gauge Olot–Girona railway. The line has since been converted into a greenway.
Garrotxa in the context of Count of Besalú
The County of Besalú (Catalan: Comtat de Besalú, IPA: [kumˈtad də βəzəˈlu]; Latin: Comitatus Bisuldunensis) was one of the landlocked medieval Catalan counties near the Mediterranean coastline. It was roughly coterminous with the modern comarca of Garrotxa and at various times extended as far north as Corbières, Aude, now in France. Its capital was the village of Besalú. Throughout most of its history it was attached to one of the other more powerful counties, but it experienced a century of independence before it was finally and irrevocably annexed to the County of Barcelona.
