Eutheria (from Ancient Greek εὐ- (eú-), meaning "true, well", and θηρίον (thēríon), meaning "beast", and thus, "true beasts"), also called Pan-Placentalia, is the clade consisting of placental mammals and all therian mammals that are more closely related to placentals than to marsupials.

Eutherians are distinguished from non-eutherians by various phenotypic traits of the feet, ankles, jaws and teeth. All extant eutherians lack epipubic bones, which are present in all other living mammals (marsupials and monotremes). This allows for expansion of the abdomen during pregnancy, though epipubic bones are present in a number of primitive eutherians. Eutheria was named in 1872 by Theodore Gill; in 1880, Thomas Henry Huxley defined it to encompass a more broadly defined group than Placentalia.

The pluriblast is a pluripotent population of cells in the embryogenesis of marsupials, called the inner cell mass in eutherians. The pluriblast is distinct from the trophoblast, and gives rise to the germ layers of the embryo, as well as extra embryonic endoderm and extra embryonic mesoderm. Both the pluriblast and trophoblast arise from the totipotent cells of the early conceptus. By definition, the pluriblast does not give rise to trophoblast cells during normal development, although it may retain this potential under experimental conditions.

In metatherians (marsupials), the pluriblast forms part of the blastocyst wall and no structure exists that can be described as an inner cell mass. The cerebrum, or the largest part of the vertebrate brain, is made up of two cerebral hemispheres. The deep groove known as the longitudinal fissure divides the cerebrum into the left and right hemispheres, but the hemispheres remain united by the corpus callosum, a large bundle of nerve fibers in the middle of the brain whose primary function is to integrate sensory and motor signals between the hemispheres. In eutherian (placental) mammals, other bundles of nerve fibers like the corpus callosum exist, including the anterior commissure, the posterior commissure, and the fornix, but compared with the corpus callosum, they are much smaller in size.

Broadly, the hemispheres are made up of two types of tissues. The thin outer layer of the cerebral hemispheres is made up of gray matter, composed of neuronal cell bodies, dendrites, and synapses; this outer layer constitutes the cerebral cortex (cortex is Latin for "bark of a tree"). Below that is the larger inner layer of white matter, composed of axons and myelin.

Thylacosmilidae is an extinct family of metatherian predators, related to the modern marsupials, which lived in South America between the Miocene and Pliocene epochs. Like other South American mammalian predators that lived prior to the Great American Biotic Interchange, these animals belonged to the order Sparassodonta, which occupied the ecological niche of many eutherian mammals of the order Carnivora from other continents. The family's most notable feature are the elongated, laterally flattened fangs, which is a remarkable evolutionary convergence with other saber-toothed mammals like Barbourofelis and Smilodon.
