The Trucial States, also known as the Trucial Coast, the Trucial Sheikhdoms, or Trucial Oman, was a group of tribal confederations to the south of the Persian Gulf (southeastern Arabia) whose leaders had signed protective treaties, or truces, with the United Kingdom between 1820 and 1892.
The Trucial States remained an informal British protectorate until the treaties were revoked on 1 December 1971. The following day, six of the sheikhdoms—Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah—formed the United Arab Emirates; the seventh, Ras Al Khaimah, joined on 10 February 1972.

Dubai is the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates and the capital of the Emirate of Dubai. It is on a creek on the southeastern coast of the Persian Gulf. As of 2025, its population stands at 4 million, 92% of whom are expatriates. The wider urban area includes Sharjah and has a population of 5 million people as of 2023, while the Dubai–Sharjah–Ajman metropolitan area has a population of 6 million people.
Founded in the early 18th century as a pearling and fishing settlement, Dubai became a regional trade hub in the 20th century after declaring itself a free port (1901) and extending the Creek (1961). Modest oil revenue helped accelerate Dubai's development from the 1960s to the 1990s, when the city started to diversify its economy. In 2018, oil production contributed less than 1% to the emirate's GDP.

De facto, the ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi holds the presidency and the ruler of the Emirate of Dubai holds the premiership. The president is also the commander-in-chief of the UAE Armed Forces. The United Arab Emirates is the only presidential monarchy in the world.

Jebel Ali (Arabic: جبل علي) is a major port city located within the Emirate of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, approximately 35 kilometers southwest of the city of Dubai. Situated along the southern coast of the Persian Gulf, it serves as one of the UAE’s most significant industrial and logistical hubs. Off its coast lies the artificial archipelago Palm Jebel Ali, one of several palm-shaped islands developed by Nakheel as part of Dubai’s coastal expansion projects. The area also encompasses Expo City Dubai, the legacy site of Expo 2020, and Dubai Investment Park, a mixed-use complex that includes industrial, commercial, and residential zones. As of 2024, it has a total population of 540,732.
Initially a sparsely inhabited coastal area, Jebel Ali was developed in the 1970s as part of a state-directed initiative to diversify Dubai’s economy beyond oil. It is the site of the Port of Jebel Ali, the largest man-made harbor in the world and the busiest port in the Middle East by container volume. The port is operated by DP World and serves as a major regional transshipment and cargo handling hub.
