Dulles International Airport in the context of American Airlines Flight 77

American Airlines Flight 77 was a scheduled domestic transcontinental passenger flight from Dulles International Airport in Northern Virginia to Los Angeles International Airport in Los Angeles. The Boeing 757-200 aircraft serving the flight was hijacked by five al-Qaeda terrorists on the morning of September 11, 2001, as part of the September 11 attacks. The hijacked airliner was deliberately crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia, killing all 64 aboard and another 125 in the building.

Flight 77 became airborne at 08:20 ET. Thirty-one minutes after takeoff, the attackers stormed the cockpit and forced the passengers and crew to the rear of the cabin, threatening the hostages but initially sparing all of them. Lead hijacker Hani Hanjour assumed control of the aircraft after having undergone extensive flight training as part of his preparation for the attack. In the meantime, two people aboard discreetly made phone calls to family members and relayed information on the situation without the knowledge of their assailants.

Dulles International Airport in the context of Silver Line (Washington Metro)

The Silver Line is a rapid transit line of the Washington Metro system, consisting of 39 stations in Loudoun County, Fairfax County and Arlington County, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Prince George's County, Maryland. The Silver Line runs from Ashburn in Loudoun County, Virginia to Largo and New Carrollton in Prince George's County, Maryland. Five stations, from both lines' eastern terminus at Largo to Benning Road, are shared with the Blue Line alone; five stations are shared with the Orange Line alone from both lines eastern terminus at New Carrollton to Minnesota Avenue; thirteen stations, from Stadium–Armory to Rosslyn, with both the Orange Line and Blue Lines; and five stations from Court House to East Falls Church with the Orange Line alone. Only the 11 stations from McLean to Ashburn are exclusive to the Silver Line. Five of these 11 stations began service on July 26, 2014 as Phase 1, and six began service as Phase 2 on November 15, 2022.

The 11.7-mile (18.8 km) portion of the Silver Line between its split from the Orange Line and Wiehle–Reston East is entirely in Fairfax County, Virginia and was constructed as Phase 1 of the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project. Phase 2 expanded the line another 11.5 miles (18.5 km) to Ashburn in Loudoun County via Dulles International Airport. The $6.01 billion, 23.1-mile Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project is Metro's largest expansion by route mileage since its inception in 1976.

The Dulles International Airport Main Terminal is located in Loudoun and Fairfax counties in Dulles, Virginia, United States. The original structure, 600 feet (180 m) long and 150 feet (46 m) wide, was designed by Eero Saarinen and completed in 1962 as the first terminal at Dulles International Airport. Annexes to the west and east were completed in 1996 as part of a renovation designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), bringing its total length to 1,240 feet (380 m). The terminal is operated by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which operates Dulles Airport as a whole. The terminal's design is a suspended structure with roof panels of precast concrete suspended between cables which span the width of the building.

The Main Terminal's design includes parallel slanted colonnades on the terminal's north and south facades, interspersed with glass walls. The landside facade to the north is taller than the airside facade to the south; a concave roof supported by cables connects the two facades, descending toward the center. A concourse and control tower extend south toward the airport's apron. The interior was originally divided into two levels: an upper story for departing passengers and a lower story for arriving passengers. Saarinen's original design included mobile lounges that ferried passengers directly to planes, reducing the need for long walks or taxiing while increasing the airport's operational flexibility. The modern terminal includes four airline gates known as Z gates, where aircraft could unload passengers directly. In addition, two basements contain security screening facilities and an AeroTrain people-mover station.

Lucketts is an unincorporated historic hamlet in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States, along U.S. Route 15, north of Leesburg. It was originally known as "Black Swamp" due to the large number of black oak trees growing in the area at the time of its settlement. From the late 18th century until the mid-19th century, it was known as "Goresville" after the name of prominent local landowner, Thomas Gore. The name was finally changed to "Lucketts" in 1865. The town's Lucketts School is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Lucketts is approximately 7 miles (11 km) north of Leesburg and 18 miles (29 km) south of Frederick, Maryland. The Potomac River is between Lucketts and Frederick, approximately 4 miles (6 km) north on Route 15. Also, Washington Dulles Airport (IAD) is located 23 miles (37 km) to the south, with some of the airport's major approach and departure paths directly above. The MARC commuter train makes frequent stops on the Maryland side in Point of Rocks. Train whistles of the freight trains at night and dawn are frequently heard throughout Lucketts.
