Diyarbakır Province in the context of "Mayyafariqin"

Diyarbakır is the largest Kurdish-majority city in Turkey. It is the administrative center of Diyarbakır Province.

Situated around a high plateau by the banks of the Tigris river on which stands the historic Diyarbakır Fortress, it is the administrative capital of the Diyarbakır Province of southeastern Turkey. It is the second-largest city in the Southeastern Anatolia Region. As of December 2024, the Metropolitan Province population was 1,833,684 of whom 1,164,940 lived in the built-up (or metro) area made of the 4 urban districts (Bağlar, Kayapınar, Sur and Yenişehir).

The Southeastern Anatolia Project (Turkish: Güneydoğu Anadolu Projesi, GAP) is a multi-sector integrated regional development project based on the concept of sustainable development for the 9 million people (2023) living in the Southeastern Anatolia region of Turkey. According to the Southeastern Anatolia Project Regional Development Administration, the aim of the GAP is to eliminate regional development disparities by raising incomes and living standards and to contribute to the national development targets of social stability and economic growth by enhancing the productive and employment generating capacity of the rural sector.The Southeastern Anatolia Region extending over wide plains in the Euphrates-Tigris Basin encompass the administrative provinces of ( Adıyaman, Batman, Diyarbakır, Gaziantep, Kilis, Siirt, Şanlıurfa, Şırnak and Mardin )which are located in the basins of the Euphrates and Tigris and in Upper Mesopotamia. The surface area of the region bordering with Syria to the south and with Iraq to the southeast is 75,193 square kilometres which corresponds to 9.7% of Turkey's total surface area. Turkey has in total 8.5 million hectares of irrigable land and GAP's share in this total is 20 per cent.The total cost of the project is over 190 billion Turkish lira (TL) (2020 adjusted price).

Current activities under GAP include sectors like agriculture and irrigation, hydroelectric power production, urban and rural infrastructure, forestry, education and health. Water resources development envisaged the construction of 22 dams and 19 power plants.

Bağlar is a municipality and district of Diyarbakır Province, Turkey. Its area is 429 km, and its population is 406,471 (2022). It covers the southwestern part of the city of Diyarbakır and the adjacent countryside. The district Bağlar was created in 2008 from part of the central district (Merkez) of Diyarbakır.

In the local elections of March 2019, Zeyyat Ceylan was elected as a Mayor with 70,34% of the votes. But on 11 April the Supreme Election Board decided not to deliver him the right to serve as Mayor due to having been dismissed from public office before. The Mayorship was instead delivered to Hüseyin Beyoğlu from the Justice and Development Party (AKP) who polled second with 25,46%.

Kayapınar is municipality and district of Diyarbakır Province, Turkey. Its area is 480 km, and its population is 419,513 (2022). It covers the northwestern part of the city of Diyarbakır and the adjacent countryside. The district Kayapınar was created in 2008 from part of the central district (Merkez) of Diyarbakır.

In the local elections of 31 March 2019, Keziban Yılmaz was elected Mayor with 66.35% of the votes. On the 21 October 2019, he was detained due to an investigation concerning propaganda for a terror organization and being a member of a terror organization.

Sur is a municipality and district of Diyarbakır Province, Turkey. Its area is 1,227 km, and its population is 100,613 (2022). It covers the eastern part of the city of Diyarbakır and the adjacent countryside. The historical Diyarbakır Fortress lies in this district, which takes its name from the castle walls (Turkish: sur).

Yenişehir (Turkish pronunciation: ['jeniʃehiɾ]) is a municipality and district of Diyarbakır Province, Turkey. Its area is 358 km, and its population is 219,759 (2022). It covers the southwestern part of the city of Diyarbakır and the adjacent countryside. The district Yenişehir was created in 2008 from part of the central district (Merkez) of Diyarbakır.
