Bojonegoro Regency (Indonesian: Kabupaten Bojonegoro, older spelling is Kabupaten Bodjanegara, Javanese: ꦑꦧꦸꦥꦠꦺꦤ꧀ꦨꦗꦤꦼꦒꦫ, romanized: Kabupatèn Bojånegårå) is a regency in East Java Province of Indonesia, about 110 km west of Surabaya and 73 km northeast of Ngawi. It covers a land area of 2,307.06 km (890.76 miles) and is located in the inland part of the northern Java plain, mainly on the south bank of the Solo River, the longest river in Java. It had a population of 1,209,973 at the 2010 Census and 1,301,635 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2024 was 1,366,227 (comprising 686,426 males and 679,801 females). The administrative centre of the regency is the town of Bojonegoro.

Previously known as a major producer of teak and tobacco, Bojonegoro is a focus of attention in Indonesia as a new oil field has been found in this area. This oil find is the biggest oil discovery in Indonesia in three decades and one of the biggest reserves in Indonesia.

The Surabaya metropolitan area or Greater Surabaya, known locally as Gerbangkertosusila (Javanese: ꦒꦼꦂꦧꦁ​ꦏꦼꦂꦠꦱꦸꦱꦶꦭ, romanized: Gěrbangkěrtåsusila, from Gresik-Bangkalan-Mojokerto-Surabaya-Sidoarjo-Lamongan), is a metropolitan area in East Java, Indonesia. It is the country's second-largest metropolitan area, after the Jakarta metropolitan area. Gerbangkertosusila had also been used in presidential decrees to refer to a larger region which includes Jombang, Bojonegoro, and Tuban Regencies.

Bojonegoro Regency in the context of Tuban Regency

Tuban Regency (Javanese: ꦏꦧꦸꦥꦠꦺꦤ꧀ꦠꦸꦧꦤ꧀) is a regency in the East Java province of Indonesia. The Dutch name of the regency is 'Toeban'. It covers a land area of 1,839.94 sq. km, and had a population of 1,118,464 at the 2010 Census and 1,198,012 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2024 was 1,266,396 (comprising 634,173 males and 632,223 females). The administrative centre is the coastal town of Tuban.

The Regency is bordered to the north by the Java Sea, east by Lamongan Regency, south by Bojonegoro Regency, and west by Blora Regency and Rembang Regency (both in Central Java Province). The regency is located in a strategic area, on the border of East Java with Central Java, passed by the main highway (Jalan Nasional Daendels) along the north coast of Java (here called Jalur Pantai Utara or Jalur Pantura). In ancient times, Tuban was the main port of Majapahit and was a center of Islamic spreading by Walisongo.
