⭐ Core Definition: Batavian Navy

The Batavian Navy (Dutch: Bataafsche marine) was the navy of the Batavian Republic which existed from 1795 to 1806. Founded in May 1795 after the Dutch Republic was overrun by France during the French Revolutionary Wars and transformed into the Batavian Republic, it assumed control over the ships and administrative infrastructure of the Dutch States Navy. The Batavian navy underwent a thorough reorganisation and embarked on several construction programmes in an attempt to match the strength of its main rival, the Royal Navy. Despite this, the British navy inflicted several crushing defeats on the Batavian Navy at the capitulation of Saldanha Bay, Battle of Camperdown and Vlieter incident.

The British also occupied much of the Dutch colonial empire during the French Revolutionary Wars, which the Batavian Navy was powerless to prevent. Despite losing much of its fleet by 1802, the Batavian navy's reorganisations proved to be durable, and it played a role in Napoleon's planned invasion of the United Kingdom and efforts to restore Batavian rule in the Dutch colonies returned by Britain under the Treaty of Amiens. However, the Batavian Navy was again unable to prevent Britain from occupying its colonies after the Napoleonic Wars began in 1803. The Batavian Republic became the Kingdom of Holland in June 1806, with the Batavian navy being transformed into the navy of the Kingdom of Holland.

Batavian Navy in the context of Dutch States Navy

The Dutch States Navy (Dutch: Staatse vloot, lit.'States fleet') was the navy of the Dutch Republic from 1588 to 1795. Coming into existence during the Eighty Years' War, the States Navy played a major role in expanding and protecting the Dutch colonial empire, in addition to participating in numerous conflicts with rival European powers. The States Navy consisted of five admiralties, which were respectively based in Amsterdam, Friesland, the Noorderkwartier, Rotterdam and Zeeland. This organisational structure contributed to the decentralised nature of the States Navy, which heavily relied upon privateers and armed merchantmen in times of war.

In addition to the Eighty Years' War, the States Navy also participated in the Anglo-Dutch Wars, the Dutch–Portuguese War, the Northern Wars, the Franco-Dutch War and various conflicts of the French–Habsburg rivalry. It also played a major role in protecting Dutch overseas trade, including Dutch involvement in the triangular trade and the Atlantic slave trade. As a result of the War of the First Coalition, the Dutch Republic ceased to exist in 1795, being succeeded by the Batavian Republic; the States Navy was correspondingly transformed into the Batavian Navy. The current navy of the Netherlands, the Royal Netherlands Navy, is the modern successor of the States Navy and inherited many of its traditions.

Batavian Navy in the context of Royal Netherlands Navy

The Royal Netherlands Navy (Dutch: Koninklijke Marine, pronounced [ˈkoːnɪŋkləkə maːˈrinə], meaning 'Royal Navy') is the maritime service branch of the Netherlands Armed Forces. It traces its history to 8 January 1488, making it the third-oldest navy in the world.

During the 17th and early 18th centuries, the Dutch States Navy was one of the most powerful navies in the world and played an active role in the Anglo-Dutch Wars, Franco-Dutch War, Nine Years' War and War of the Spanish Succession. However, by the late 18th century it had declined through neglect and was no longer a match for either the British or French navies. The Batavian Navy and navy of the Kingdom of Holland played an active role in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, though both were repeatedly yoked to French interests.

Batavian Navy in the context of Navy of the Kingdom of Holland

The navy of the Kingdom of Holland (Dutch: marine van het Koninkrijk Holland) existed from 1806 to 1813. Founded in June 1806 after Napoleon transformed the Batavian Commonwealth into a kingdom ruled by his brother Louis Bonaparte, the Dutch navy inherited its ships from the Batavian Navy, which had been severely weakened by mutinies and British naval attacks. Most of the Dutch navy was blockaded in European ports by the Royal Navy, and its Dutch East Indies squadron was destroyed in a British campaign. Napoleon annexed Holland into France in 1810, though the Dutch navy was not incorporated into its French counterpart and continued to exist until the Royal Netherlands Navy was founded in 1813.
