The village is located on the eastern shore of Norsjø, across the lake from the villages of Ulefoss and Helgja in Nome Municipality. The village of Valebø lies about 25 kilometres (16 mi) to the northwest of the town of Skien, about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) northwest of the village of Hoppestad, and about 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) to the south of Nordagutu in Midt-Telemark Municipality.

The village is the site of Valebø Church. The Bratsbergbanen railway line stops at a station in Valebø.

It is located in the traditional district of Grenland, although historically it belonged to Grenmar/Skiensfjorden, while Grenland referred the Norsjø area and . The administrative centre of the municipality is the city of Skien, which is also the administrative centre of the whole county. Some of the notable villages in the municipality include Åfoss, Hoppestad, Klovholt, Luksefjell, Melum, Kilebygda, Skotfoss, Sneltvedt, and Valebø.

The 779-square-kilometre (301 sq mi) municipality is the 147th largest by area out of the 356 municipalities in Norway. This entire area is home to more than 100,000 people.

Hoppestad is a village in Skien Municipality in Telemark county, Norway. The village is located about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) north of the town of Skien. The village of Luksefjell lies about 20 kilometres (12 mi) to the north and the village of Valebø lies about 18 kilometres (11 mi) to the northwest. The Hoppestadelva river runs through the village.

The 0.52-square-kilometre (130-acre) village had a population (2012) of 571 and a population density of 1,098 inhabitants per square kilometre (2,840/sq mi). Since 2012, the population and area data for this village area has not been separately tracked by Statistics Norway, but now it is considered part of the Porsgrunn/Skien metropolitan area.
