Tiran Island (Arabic: جزيرة تيران Jezîret Tīrān, Jazīrat Tīrān), is a Saudi island in the Red Sea located in the Strait of Tiran. The island's administration was transferred by King Abdulaziz Al Saud to Egypt in 1950 due to concerns of Israeli expansion while Saudi Arabia lacked a navy to protect the island. The island was captured by Israel during the 1967 Arab–Israeli war and was returned to Egypt during the 1979 Egypt–Israel peace treaty. The island's administration was transferred back to Saudi Arabia by Egypt in April 2016.

Tiran Island in the context of Straits of Tiran

The Straits of Tiran (Arabic: مضيق تيران Maḍīq Tīrān) are the narrow sea passages between the Sinai and Arabian peninsulas that connect the Gulf of Aqaba and the Red Sea. The distance between the two peninsulas is about 13 km (7 nautical miles). The Multinational Force and Observers monitors the compliance of Egypt in maintaining freedom of navigation of the straits, as provided under the Egypt–Israel peace treaty.

The body is named after Tiran Island, located at its entrance 5 or 6 km (3 or 4 mi) from the Sinai. Sanafir Island lies to the east of Tiran, southeast of the shallow strait between Tiran and Saudi Arabia.

Sanafir Island (Arabic: جزيرة صنافر, romanizedJazīrat Ṣanafir, pronounced [ɡeˈziːret sˤɑnɑˈfiːɾ]) is a Saudi island in the Red Sea. It was previously administered by Egypt. Its area is about 33 km (13 sq mi) andit is located at the entrance to the Straits of Tiran, which separates the Gulf of Aqaba from the Red Sea. The island is about 2.5 km from Tiran Island. The island is characterized by floating coral reefs.

The island was under Egyptian control in the past but reverted to Saudi Arabian sovereignty on 8 April 2016, after the completion of transfer procedures (Pending). On 17 June 2017, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi ratified the maritime demarcation agreement between the two countries. It was adopted on maps and official documents on 17 August 2017 and approved by the Egyptian House of Representatives on 14 June 2017, which approved the transfer of the island and its neighbor to Saudi Arabia. The United Nations was notified in accordance with the Charter of Article 102 of the provisions of subsidiarity and sovereignty relating to islands and maritime territory.
