Sumenep, officially the Sumenep Regency, was previously known as Samanap or Zamanap in English, is a regency of the East Java province, Indonesia. It has an area of 2,093.50 square kilometres (808.30 sq mi) and an population of 1,143,002 (comprising 552,127 males and 590,875 females) as at mid 2024. The administrative capital is Kota Sumenep, has a name that reflects it is historical and cultural evolution. Formerly, the area was briefly known as Sungeneb in the 13th century, Purwareja in the 15th century, and Sumekar in the 16th century.

The regency occupies the eastern end of Madura island and also includes numerous smaller islands to the east (primarily Talango Island, the Sapudi Islands, and the Kangean Islands), to the north (the Masalembu Islands), and to the south (the Giligenteng Islands) of Madura. It is bordered by the Pamekasan Regency to the west, Madura Strait to the south, and the Java Sea to the north and east. The airport nearby is Trunojoyo Airport with flights to Surabaya.

Madura is an Indonesian island off the northeastern coast of Java. The island has an area of about 4,471.05 square kilometres (1,726.28 sq mi), but administratively Madura comprises an area of around 5,408.45 square kilometres (2,088.21 sq mi) due to the inclusion of various smaller islands to the east, southeast and north that are part of Madura's easternmost Sumenep Regency. Madura is part of the province of East Java. It is separated from Java by the narrow Madura Strait. The administered area had a density of 773 people per km (2,003 per sq. mile) in mid-2024, while the main island had a somewhat higher figure of 862.3 per km (2,233 per sq. mile).

The Masalembu Islands (Indonesian: Kepulauan Masalembu) form a small archipelago in the Java Sea to the north of Madura in Indonesia. Kota Sumenep, officially the Kota Sumenep District, was previously known as Town of Samanap in English, is a town and district which serves as the regency seat of Sumenep Regency, in the East Java province of Indonesia. It is the second smallest and populated district in Sumenep Regency, with an area of 27.84 square kilometres (10.75 sq mi) and the population of 75,367 as of 2023. The administrative capital is Pamolokan. On 29 June 2004, part of the Kota Sumenep District was expanded into a separate district, namely Batuan District.

This district is located 175 km east of Surabaya and 965 km east of Jakarta. Geographically, Kota Sumenep is in the eastern coast of Madura island. Infrastructure and settlements from Sumenep Regency are also concentrated in this district, which is the center of government and economy for regency at the far eastern end of the island of Madura. Hugely prosperous in the eighteenth century, it is now a quiet, peaceful backwater, with its past glory still in evidence.

Sumenep Regency in the context of Sapudi Islands

Sapudi Islands are a group of 14 islands that lie between Madura Island and the Kangean islands of Indonesia. It is part of the Greater Sunda Islands and is located in the Java Sea. The Sapudi Islands are administered as three kecamatan (districts) of Sumenep Regency in the province of East Java. The land area is 167.38 km, and there was a population of 82,024 at the 2010 Census and 85,284 at the 2020 Census, but the official estimate for mid 2022 showed a decline to 77,153. The Sapudi dialect of the Madurese language is spoken on the islands.

Nonggunong District includes the northern half of Sapudi Island (Pulau Sapedi) and the small offshore islands of Manok and Payangan. Gayam District includes the southern half of Sapudi Island. Raas District comprises 11 islands further east, of which the main are Raas, Ketupat and Tonduk. The main settlement on Sapudi Island (Nonggunong District) is Sonok, while on Raas Island, the main settlement is at Brakas in the east.

Sumenep Regency in the context of Trunojoyo Airport

Trunojoyo Airport (Indonesian: Bandara Trunojoyo) (IATA: SUP, ICAO: WART) is an airport near Sumenep, a city in the Madura Island of East Java, Indonesia. It is named after the Madurese nobleman Trunajaya, who led a rebellion in the 17th century against Mataram Sultanate and Dutch forces. The airport is the only airport on the island of Madura. It currently only serves regional flights to Bawean and Pagerungan in the Sapeken Islands, operated by Susi Air. Previously, there were flights to Surabaya operated by Citilink and Wings Air, but these services were discontinued in 2022 due to low demand. This airport also serves as a base for several flight schools, including Merpati Pilot School, Akademi Penerbang Indonesia Banyuwangi, Nusa Flying International, Aviatera, Global Aviation, and Bali International Flight Academy.
