Sukoharjo Regency is a regency (Indonesian: kabupaten) in the Central Java province in Indonesia. It covers an area of 493.23 km and had a population of 824,238 at the 2010 Census and 907,587 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as of mid-2024 was 916,472 (comprising 458,337 males and 458,135 females). Its administrative centre is in the large town of Sukoharjo, about 10 km south of Surakarta; the built-up area of the town had 324,214 inhabitants at the 1990 Census. This regency is bordered by the city of Surakarta in the north, Karanganyar Regency in the east, Wonogiri Regency and the Special Region of Yogyakarta in the south as well as Klaten Regency in the west. The regency is part of the metropolitan zone of Surakarta, which is known as Subosukawonosraten.

Sukoharjo Regency in the context of Surakarta

Surakarta (Javanese: ꦯꦸꦫꦏꦂꦠ, Pegon: سوراكارتا), known colloquially as Solo (Javanese: ꦱꦭ; Sålå), is a major city in Central Java, Indonesia. The 46.72 km (18.04 sq mi) city adjoins Karanganyar Regency and Boyolali Regency to the north, Karanganyar Regency and Sukoharjo Regency to the east and west, and Sukoharjo Regency to the south. On the eastern side of Solo lies Solo River (Bengawan Solo). Its metropolitan area, consisting of Surakarta City and the surrounding six regencies ("Greater Solo Area", formerly Special Region of Surakarta), was home to 6,837,753 inhabitants according to the official estimates for mid 2023, 526,870 of whom reside in the city proper.

Surakarta is the birthplace of the President of Indonesia from 2014 to 2024, Joko Widodo, as well as his son and current Vice President of Indonesia, Gibran Rakabuming Raka. The former served as Mayor of Surakarta from 2005 to 2012, as did the latter from 2021 to 2024.

Sukoharjo Regency in the context of Abu Bakar Baasyir

Abu Bakar Ba'asyir (born 17 August 1938), also known as Abu Bakar Bashir, Abdus Somad, and Ustad Abu ("Teacher Abu") is an Indonesian Muslim cleric and leader of Jamaah Ansharut Tauhid and Jemaah Islamiyah.

He ran the Al-Mukmin boarding school in Ngruki, Sukoharjo Regency, Central Java, which he co-founded with Abdullah Sungkar in 1972. He was in exile in Malaysia for 17 years during the secular New Order administration of President Suharto resulting from various activities, including urging the implementation of Sharia law.
