Subdivisions of Russia in the context of Novaya Zemlya

Novaya Zemlya, also spelled Novaja Zemlja, is an archipelago in northern Russia. It is situated in the Arctic Ocean, in the extreme northeast of Europe, with Cape Flissingsky, on the northern island, considered the easternmost point of Europe. To Novaya Zemlya's west lies the Barents Sea and to the east is the Kara Sea.

Novaya Zemlya consists of two main islands, the northern Severny Island and the southern Yuzhny Island, which are separated by the Matochkin Strait. Administratively, it is incorporated as Novaya Zemlya District, one of the twenty-one in Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russia. Municipally, it is incorporated as Novaya Zemlya Urban Okrug.

Subdivisions of Russia in the context of Administrative divisions of Arkhangelsk Oblast

Within the framework of administrative divisions, Arkhangelsk Oblast is divided into six cities and towns of oblast significance, twenty-one districts, and two island territories (Franz Joseph Land and Victoria Island). Besides, Mirny is a town under the federal government management.

In terms of the area, the biggest administrative districts are Novaya Zemlya (90,650 square kilometres (35,000 sq mi)) and Mezensky District (34,400 square kilometres (13,300 sq mi)). The smallest one is Solovetsky District.

Yuzhno-Kurilsky District (Russian: Ю́жно-Кури́льский райо́н) is an administrative district (raion) of Sakhalin Oblast, Russia; one of the seventeen in the oblast. Municipally, it is incorporated as Yuzhno-Kurilsky Urban Okrug. It is located on the southern Kuril Islands southeast of the Island of Sakhalin, comprising the islands of Kunashir, Shikotan, and the Habomai. The area of the district is 1,856.1 square kilometers (716.6 sq mi). Its administrative center is the urban locality (an urban-type settlement) of Yuzhno-Kurilsk, located on Kunashir Island. Population: 9,501 (2010 census); 9,727 (2002 census); 13,597 (1989 Soviet census). The population of Yuzhno-Kurilsk accounts for 61.4% of the district's total population.

Kurilsky District (Russian: Кури́льский райо́н, romanizedKuríl'skiy rayón) is an administrative district (raion) of Sakhalin Oblast, Russia; one of the seventeen in the oblast. Municipally, it is incorporated as Kurilsky Urban Okrug. It is located on the central Kuril Islands southeast of the Island of Sakhalin. The area of the district is 5,145.9 square kilometers (1,986.8 sq mi). Its administrative center is the town of Kurilsk. Population: 7,359 (2010 census); 7,108 (2002 census); 10,498 (1989 Soviet census). The population of Kurilsk accounts for 28.1% of the district's total population. The name is sometimes spelled Kurliskiy or Kurliskiye in English.
