Sofiiska Square, also translated as Sophia Square, (Ukrainian: Софійська площа, romanizedSofiiska ploshcha) is a square in central Old Kyiv, Ukraine. Located in the Shevchenkivskyi District of Kyiv, the square lies in front of Saint Sophia Cathedral. It is bordered by Volodymyrska Street, and features a monument of Bohdan Khmelnytsky.

The city's Christmas and New Year's festivities were held in Sofiiska Square from 2014 onwards, after they were moved from Maidan Nezalezhnosti due to the events of Euromaidan. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, many of the festivities have been indefinitely suspended.

Sophia Square in the context of Unification Act

The Unification Act (Ukrainian: Акт Злуки, romanizedAkt Zluky, IPA: [ˈɑkt ˈzlukɪ]; or Велика Злука, Velyka Zluka, IPA: [ˈwɛlɪkɐ ˈzlukɐ]) was an agreement signed by the Ukrainian People's Republic and the West Ukrainian People's Republic in Sophia Square in Kyiv on 22 January 1919. Since 1999, it is celebrated every year as the Day of Unity of Ukraine to commemorate the signing of the treaty; it is a state holiday in Ukraine, though not a public holiday.

Old Kyiv (Ukrainian: Старий Київ, romanizedStaryi Kyiv, IPA: [stɐˈrɪj ˈkɪjiu̯]) is a historical neighborhood of Kyiv. Other names include Upper City (Ukrainian: Верхнє місто, Ukrainian pronunciation: [ˈʋɛrxnʲe ˈmʲisto]; as opposed to Podil, the "Lower City"), Old Town, and others. It is located at the far eastern portion of the Shevchenkivskyi District. The approximate boundaries are St. Andrew's Church, Volodymyrska Hill, Independence Square, Golden Gate, Kyiv Velodrome [uk] (alias Kyiv Velotrack or Kyiv Bicycle Track), and Lvivska Square [uk].
