Singapore Police Force in the context of "Singapore National Day parade"

The National Day Parade (NDP) is an annual parade held in Singapore to commemorate its independence. Held annually on 9 August, it is the main public celebration of National Day, and consists of a parade incorporating contingents of the Singapore Armed Forces, Singapore Police Force, Singapore Civil Defence Force, primary and secondary school uniformed groups and other community groups, followed by a cultural presentation featuring music, songs, dance displays, and a fireworks show.

First held on 9 August 1966 to mark the one-year anniversary of Singapore's declaration of independence from Malaysia, it has been celebrated annually ever since. The parade had historically been held at the Padang, but were occasionally held at the former National Stadium, and in a "decentralised" format across the country to encourage wider public participation. Beginning in 1984, the Padang began to host the parade on a regular cycle (initially once every three years, and then every five years beginning 1995) and during all years marking anniversaries of national significance, with the event otherwise hosted by the National Stadium.

Singapore maintains an active conscription system in accordance with the regulations set by the Government of Singapore, known as National Service (NS). This requires all qualified male Singaporean citizens and second-generation permanent residents to serve a period of active duty military service in the uniformed services.

Conscription was first instituted in Singapore in 1967 to help build the country's armed forces having just gained its independence two years prior in 1965. The government's rationale was that a strong military is an indispensable guarantor of the country's continued sovereignty, and has since been expanded to involve its police force and civil defence force. Upon enlistment, male citizens and second-generation permanent residents serve two years in active duty as full-time national servicemen (NSFs) in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), Singapore Police Force (SPF) or Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), following which they transit to an operationally-ready reservist state as operationally-ready national servicemen (NSmen).

The planning areas of Singapore, also referred to as Development Guide Plan (DGP) areas, serve as the second level of urban planning and census divisions in Singapore as defined by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA). These areas provide a framework for urban development, land use planning and statistical analysis across the country. There are currently 55 planning areas, grouped into five regions: Central, East, North, North-East and West. Each planning area helps coordinate local development while contributing to the overall structure of its respective region. Each planning area is further subdivided into hundreds of subzones for more detailed planning purposes on the lowest level. A DGP is prepared for each planning area, providing detailed land use and development guidelines down to the individual plot level.

Planning areas were introduced in the early 1990s following the release of the 1991 Concept Plan, which marked a shift toward a long-term and strategic urban development. Since their implementation, planning area boundaries have been adopted by various government agencies for administrative and statistical purposes. For instance, the Department of Statistics of the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) first used planning areas in its reporting of the 2000 census, replacing earlier divisions based on electoral boundaries. The Singapore Police Force (SPF) similarly aligned its Neighbourhood Police Centres (NPCs) jurisdictions with planning areas in 1999, moving away from the electoral division-based boundaries of the former Neighbourhood Police Posts (NPPs) system.

The Airport Police Division (APD) is the airport police unit of the Singapore Police Force. It has jurisdiction and responsibility for the maintenance of law and order within Singapore Changi Airport, Seletar Airport, Changi Airfreight Centre and Airport Logistics Park of Singapore. The APD also administers the National Civil Aviation Security Programme, National Civil Aviation Security Training Programme, and National Civil Aviation Security Quality Control Programme.

APD works closely with the government agencies such as the Ministry of Transport, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, and Immigration & Checkpoints Authority, as well as companies operating in or around the airport such as Changi Airport Group, airline operators, and ground handling agencies.

The Police Coast Guard (PCG) is a division of the Singapore Police Force that combines the functions of marine police and coast guard in Singapore. Its duties include the law enforcement and search and rescue operations in collaboration with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority. It is headquartered at Brani Regional Base on Pulau Brani.
