Sayyid in the context of Sharifian Caliphate

The Sharifian Caliphate (Arabic: الخلافة الشريفية, romanizedal-Khilāfat al-Sharīfiyya) was a Caliphate proclaimed by the Sharifian leaders of the Hejaz in 1924, replacing the Ottoman Caliphate, which was abolished by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. Even though the Banu Hashim held the caliphate at various points in history, Hussein bin Ali, the Sharif of Mecca, was the first and last caliph of this lineage.

In the Arab world, it represented the culmination of a long struggle to reclaim the caliphate from Ottoman hands. The first Arab revolts challenging the validity of the Ottoman caliphate and demanding that an Arab Sayyid be chosen as caliph can be traced back to 1883 when Sheikh Hamat-al-Din seized Sanaa and called for the caliphate as a Sayyid.

Banu Hashim (Arabic: بنو هاشم, romanizedBanū Hāshim) is an Ancient Arab clan within the Quraysh tribe to which the Islamic prophet Muhammad belonged, named after Muhammad's great-grandfather Hashim ibn Abd Manaf.

Members of this clan, and especially their descendants, are also referred to as Hashemites, Hashimites, Hashimids, or Bakara and often carry the surname al-Hāshimī. Sayyid in the context of History of Arabs in Afghanistan

The history of Arabs in Afghanistan spans over one millennium since the 7th century beginning with the Islamic expansion all the way until the early 20th century. The Ethnic Arabs of Afghanistan are an ethnic minority making up 1-2% of the country's population. They speak a distinct dialect of Arabic called Central Asian Arabic along with either Dari (Persian) or Pashto. Most of the early Arab communities in Afghanistan gradually lost their native language. However, a number of villages commonly referred to as Qaryeh-ye ʿArabhā (“villages of Arabs”) continue to preserve Arabic as a spoken language. Within these communities, traditional dress, cultural practices, and other markers of Arab heritage have also been retained. In recent years, renewed efforts have emerged to safeguard not only the Arabic language but also the broader Arab identity in Afghanistan, particularly under the current government, reflecting an increased recognition of the cultural and historical significance of this minority population.

Afghan Arabs are still considered a recognisable distinct ethnic group according to the Constitution of Afghanistan. Afghans who carry titles and surnames such as Sayyid, Hashimi, Quraishi, and Tamimi are usually of Arab descent.

Sayyid in the context of Banu Qatadah

The Banu Qatadah (Arabic: بنو قتادة, romanizedBanū Qatādah, lit.'Sons of Qatadah'), or the Qatadids (Arabic: القتاديون, romanizedal-Qatādayūn), were a dynasty of Hasanid sharifs that held the Sharifate of Mecca continuously from 1201 until its abolition in 1925. The Qatadids were the last of four dynasties of Hasanid sharifs (preceded by the Jafarids/Musawids, Sulaymanids, and the Hawashim) that all together ruled Mecca since about the mid-10th century. The progenitor of the dynasty was Qatadah ibn Idris, who took possession of the holy city from the Hawashim in 1201. The Emirate remained in the possession of his descendants until 1925 when the last Sharif of Mecca, Ali ibn al-Husayn, surrendered the Kingdom of Hejaz to Ibn Saud, Sultan of Nejd. The House of Bolkiah, which rules Brunei, claims Qatadid descent and Sayyid status from their ancestor Sharif Ali's grandfather Emir Rumaythah.

Sayyid in the context of Mu'in al-Din Chishti

Mu'in al-Din Hasan Chishti Sijzi (Persian: معین الدین چشتی, romanizedMuʿīn al-Dīn Chishtī; 1 February 1143 – 15 March 1236), known reverentially as Khawaja Gharib Nawaz (Persian: خواجه غریب نواز, romanizedKhawāja Gharīb Nawāz), was a Persian Sayyid Islamic scholar and mystic from Sistan, who eventually ended up settling in the Indian subcontinent in the early 13th-century, where he promulgated the Chishtiyya order of Islamic mysticism. This particular Tariqa (order) became the dominant Islamic spiritual order in medieval India. Most of the Indian Sunni saints are Chishti in their affiliation, including Nizamuddin Awliya (d. 1325) and Amir Khusrow (d. 1325).

Having arrived in the Delhi Sultanate during the reign of the sultan Iltutmish (d. 1236), Muʿīn al-Dīn moved from Delhi to Ajmer shortly thereafter, at which point he became increasingly influenced by the writings of the Sunni Hanbali scholar and mystic ʿAbdallāh Anṣārī (d. 1088), whose work on the lives of the early Islamic saints, the Ṭabāqāt al-ṣūfiyya, may have played a role in shaping Muʿīn al-Dīn's worldview. It was during his time in Ajmer that Muʿīn al-Dīn acquired the reputation of being a charismatic and compassionate spiritual preacher and teacher; and biographical accounts of his life written after his death report that he received the gifts of many "spiritual marvels (karāmāt), such as miraculous travel, clairvoyance, and visions of angels" in these years of his life. Muʿīn al-Dīn seems to have been unanimously regarded as a great saint after his death.

Sayyid in the context of Said bin Sultan, Sultan of Muscat and Oman

Sayyid Saïd bin Sultan al-Busaidi (Arabic: سعيد بن سلطان, Saʿīd bin Sulṭān, Swahili: Saïd bin Sultani) (5 June 1791 – 19 October 1856) was Sultan of Muscat and Oman, the fifth ruler of the Al Bu Said dynasty from 1804 to 4 June 1856. His rule began after a period of conflict and internecine rivalry of succession that followed the death of his father, Sultan bin Ahmad, in November 1804. He is often referred to as the Lion of Oman (أسد عمان), as one of the greatest Omani sultans.

Said's uncle Qais bin Ahmad finally agreed to Said's primacy after Said had killed his cousin, Badr bin Saif, a pretender to the throne. Said is noted for moving his capital to Zanzibar, where it remained during the time when the Omani Empire reached the zenith of its power and wealth.

Sayyid in the context of Majid bin Said of Zanzibar

Sayyid Majid bin Saïd al-Busaidi (Arabic: ماجد بن سعيد البوسعيد) (c. 1834(1870-10-07)7 October 1870) was the first Sultan of Zanzibar. He ruled Zanzibar from 19 October 1856 to 7 October 1870.

He succeeded his father Said bin Sultan as ruler of Zanzibar and East Africa, and briefly (claimed) Oman following Said’s death. During his reign his brother Bargash would prove constantly rebellious and adhered to his rule, nonetheless, Majid remained in power until his untimely death which was due to ‘over indulgence in sensual pleasures and stimulants’. The region’s wealth soared, particularly with the controversial Zanzibar slave trade.
