Pontevedra in the context of Province of Pontevedra

The province of Pontevedra (Spanish: Provincia de Pontevedra, Galician: Provincia de Pontevedra) is a province of Spain, located in the southwestern part of the autonomous community of Galicia. It is bordered by the provinces of A Coruña, Lugo, and Ourense, the country of Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean. There is a public institution named the Provincial Deputation of Pontevedra (provincial council), whose head office is in Pontevedra city, that provides direct services to citizens such as technical, financial and technological support to the councils of the 61 municipalities of the province of Pontevedra.

As of 2024, the population of the province is 947,869, of which 8% live in the capital, the city of Pontevedra, and 31% in Vigo.

The Cíes Islands (Galician: Illas Cíes; Spanish: Islas Cíes) are an archipelago off the coast of Pontevedra in Galicia, Spain, in the mouth of the Ria de Vigo. They were declared a Nature Reserve in 1980 and are included in the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park (Parque Nacional Marítimo-Terrestre das Illas Atlánticas de Galicia) created in 2002.

The Ons Island (Galician: Illa de Ons; Spanish: Isla de Ons) is part of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park. Situated in the Pontevedra estuary, it is celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes, rich gastronomy, and cultural significance. Ons belongs administratively to the municipality of Bueu, which has a regular ferry boat connection to the island.

The Battle of Puente Sanpayo or Battle of San Payo (Galician: Ponte Sampaio) took place at Ponte Sampaio, Pontevedra, between 7–9 June 1809 during the Peninsular War. It ended with a Spanish victory achieved by Colonel Pablo Morillo who repelled Marshal Michel Ney's attempt to displace him from a strong riverside position.
