The Aterno-Pescara (ancient Aternus from the Greek Aternos, Άτερνος) is a river system in Abruzzo, eastern central Italy. The river is known as the Aterno near its source in the mountains, but takes the name Pescara, actually a tributary, nearer the city of Pescara and the Adriatic Sea.

Having the greatest discharge basin of the rivers flowing into the Adriatic Sea south of the Reno, the Aterno has its origin in the Monti della Laga, near Montereale and Lago di Campotosto in the province of L'Aquila. The river flows in a southeastern direction past Pizzoli, L'Aquila, Paganica, San Demetrio ne' Vestini, and Castelvecchio Subequo through the Appennino Abruzzese mountains. It subsequently flows until the Valle Peligna (or Sulmona plateau) near Raiano, where it curves northward and receives its main tributary, the Sagittario. Later, near Popoli, it crosses the border into the province of Pescara and joins with the short, but large volumed, Pescara, by which name it is thenceforth usually known. The river flows in a northeast direction past Tocco da Casauria and Torre de' Passeri before forming the border between the province of Pescara and the province of Chieti for a short distance. It flows into the Adriatic Sea at the city of Pescara.

Its western border, shared with Lazio, lies 80 km (50 mi) east of Rome. L'Aquila is both the capital city of the Abruzzo region and of the Province of L'Aquila, and is the second largest city. The other provincial capitals are Pescara, which is Abruzzo's largest city and major port, Teramo, and Chieti. Other large cities and towns in Abruzzo include the industrial and high tech center Avezzano, as well as three important industrial and touristic centers, Vasto, Lanciano, and Sulmona.

Abruzzo borders the region of Marche to the north, Lazio to the west and northwest, Molise to the south, and the Adriatic Sea to the east. Geographically, Abruzzo is divided into a mountainous area in the west, which includes the highest massifs of the Apennines, such as the Gran Sasso d'Italia and the Maiella, and a coastal area in the east, with beaches on the Adriatic Sea.

Sulmona (Abruzzese: Sulmóne; Latin: Sulmo) is a comune (municipality) in the province of L'Aquila, in the Italian region of Abruzzo. It is located in the Valle Peligna, a plain once occupied by a lake that disappeared in prehistoric times. In the ancient era, it was one of the most important cities of the Paeligni and is known for being the native town of the Roman poet Ovid, of whom there is a bronze statue, located on the town's main road.

The closest airport is Abruzzo Airport, which is 43 miles away. The closest beach is in Pescara, which is 49 miles. Two hospitals in town are Ospedale Civile di Sulmona and Unita' Sanitaria Locale Avezzano Sulmona, though there are many other medical center options available.

The Marrucini were an Italic tribe that occupied a small strip of territory around the ancient Teate (modern Chieti), on the east coast of Abruzzo, Italy, limited by the Aterno and Foro Rivers. Other Marrucinian centers included Ceio (San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore), Iterpromium (whose ruins are under the Abbey of San Clemente at Casauria), Civitas Danzica (Rapino), and the port of Aternum (Pescara), shared with the Vestini.

Abruzzo Airport (IATA: PSR, ICAO: LIBP) is an international airport serving Pescara, Italy. It is located approximately 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) from the centre of Pescara, about 180 km (110 mi) from Rome, a 2-hour drive by car on a motorway across the Apennine Mountains. The airport is located on the state road 5 Via Tiburtina Valeria and is connected to important roads (Autostrada A25, Autostrada A14, SS714 Tangenziale di Pescara) and railway connections (Rome–Sulmona–Pescara railway, Adriatic railway).

Being the only international airport in the Abruzzo region, it plays a fundamental role for the transportation and aerial connection of the area and for that of neighbouring regions; catering also for people from Molise, Marche and the Gargano area. The airport has seen a steady increase in the number of transit passengers over the years, mainly due to a growth in low-cost airlines and flights. The terminal built in 1996 has been extended in 2011 and recently restructured in 2018.

The Autostrada A14 or Autostrada Adriatica ("Adriatic motorway") is the second-longest (743.4 kilometres (461.9 mi)) autostrada (Italian for "motorway") in Italy located in the regions of Emilia-Romagna, Marche, Abruzzo, Molise and Apulia. It is a part of the E45, E55 and E843 European routes.

Its northern end is Bologna (where it branches off the Autostrada A1) and its southern ending is at Taranto. The motorway stretches along the entire Adriatic coast. Inaugurated in 1965, it connects to Rimini, Riccione, Cattolica, Pesaro, Ancona, Civitanova Marche, San Benedetto del Tronto, Pescara, Vasto, Termoli, Foggia and Bari.

The province of Pescara (Italian: provincia di Pescara; Abruzzese: pruvìngie de Pescàre) is a province in the Abruzzo region of Italy. Its capital is the city of Pescara, which has a population of 119,483 inhabitants. As of 2017, it has a total population of 319,936 inhabitants over an area of 1,230.33 square kilometres (475.03 sq mi). The provincial president is Antonio Zaffiri and the province contains 46 comuni (sg.: comune).

Torre de' Passeri is an Italian town of 3,172 inhabitants in the province of Pescara in Abruzzo. It owes its name to the ancient "Turris Passum" (Torre del passo), a tower located near the Abbey of San Clemente a Casauria. A prominent feature of Torre de' Passeri is Castello Gizzi (called by the locals "Castelluccio"), which overlooks the entire town. Historical-enological researches have suggested that the area might be the native land of the Montepulciano vine. Torre de' Passeri is twinned with Manteigas in Portugal.
