The city of Erlangen is not part of the district, but nonetheless its administrative seat.

Altdorf bei Nürnberg (/ˈɑːltdɔːrf/ AHLT-dorf, German: [ˈaltdɔʁf baɪ ˈnʏʁnbɛʁk] ; Northern Bavarian: Oiddorf) is a town in south-eastern Germany. It is situated 25 km (16 mi) east of Nuremberg, in the district Nürnberger Land. Its name literally means “Altdorf near Nuremberg”, to distinguish it from other Altdorfs.
