New Urban Communities Authority in the context of "Suez Canal Authority"

The New Capital (Arabic: العاصمة الجديدة, romanized: al-ʿĀṣima al-Gadīda) is a new urban community east of New Cairo in Cairo Governorate, Egypt. It is a satellite city of the nation's original capital city, Cairo. As of May 2023, 14 ministries and government entities have been relocated there. On 2 April 2024, president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi took the constitutional oath for a third consecutive term in office, officially inaugurating the New Administrative Capital as the seat of government.

Plans for the new capital were announced by the then Egyptian housing minister Mostafa Madbouly at the Egypt Economic Development Conference on 13 March 2015. The capital city is considered one of the projects for economic development, and is part of a larger initiative called Egypt Vision 2030.

New Cairo (Arabic: القاهرة الجديدة el-Qāhera el-Gedīda) is a satellite city within the Cairo Governorate of Egypt, and the metropolitan area of Greater Cairo. Administratively, it is officially part of the Eastern Area of Cairo city, but like all new settlements in Egypt, it is directly governed by the New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA). The city was established in 2000 as part of Egypt's strategic effort to alleviate the chronic congestion of Greater Cairo by decentralising population and economic activity. The city is made up of a mix of residential neighbourhoods, commercial centres, and institutional zones. It is home to several gated communities, private universities, malls, international schools, and corporate headquarters, positioning it as a hub for Cairo’s upper and elite classes. Its development reflects Egypt’s broader neoliberal urban planning strategies, aimed at attracting private investments and promoting modern and western lifestyles.

According to the 2017 census, New Cairo's three qisms (police districts) had a combined population of 297,387 residents (also see population section below). The city could eventually host a population of 5 million. When compared to 6th of October, also built with the hopes of alleviating the strain on Cairo, more homes are being rented out in New Cairo.

El-Shorouk (Arabic: الشروق  pronounced [eʃʃʊˈɾuːʔ, eʃʃɪˈɾuːʔ], "the Sunrise") is a satellite city in the Eastern Area of Cairo, Egypt, also spelt Elshorouk. As a "new city" it is administered by the New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA). Shorouk is one of the so-called third-generation new cities, established by presidential decree 325/1995, allocating 11,000 acres (4,500 ha) of public land to NUCA, in addition to further allocations totalling 53,000 acres (21,000 ha) by 2017.

Badr (Arabic: بدر pronounced [bædɾ]) is a satellite city in the Eastern Area of Cairo, Egypt. It was planned and is administered by the New Urban Communities Authority(NUCA). Badr was established in 1982 according to Prime Ministerial Decree 235/1982 allocating NUCA 3000 acres in the Eastern Desert on the Cairo-Suez Highway. It has since grown to 21,000 acres, and has a 2200 acre industrial zone that includes 564 factories, in addition to this, 501 factories are still under construction. Most factories are built with the aim of exporting to Arab, African and world markets. In 2017, the census recorded 31,299 residents.

15th of May (Arabic: مدينة 15 مايو) is a new urban community and a satellite city of Cairo, Egypt, located to the south of it. Its cornerstone was laid in 1978 on an area of 6400 acres, which tripled to 18,000 acres by 2017. It was constructed to solve the problem of insufficient accommodation. However, after almost forty years, it had only 93,574 residents according to the 2017 census.

Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities (MoHUUC) is responsible for addressing Egypt's housing issues, with a mandate to provide public housing, drinking water and wastewater treatment utilities, and the planning and subdivision of new urban communities. It is headquartered in Cairo since its inception in 1961, and administers the nation's largest real estate developer, the New Urban Communities Authority, and the largest contractor, the Arab Contractors.
