The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, commonly known as the Egyptian Museum (Arabic: المتحف المصري, romanizedal-Matḥaf al-Miṣrī, Egyptian Arabic: el-Matḥaf el-Maṣri [elˈmætħæf elˈmɑsˤɾi]) (also called the Cairo Museum), located in Cairo, Egypt, houses the largest collection of Egyptian antiquities in the world. The collection includes over 120,000 items. The museum occupies a building constructed in 1901 on Tahrir Square and is one of the largest art museums in Africa.

Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in the context of Supreme Council of Antiquities

The Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA; Arabic: المجلس الأعلى للآثار, romanizedal-Majlis al-Aʻlá lil-Āthār) was established in 1994, responsible for the conservation, protection, and regulation of all antiquities and archaeological excavations in Egypt. From 1994 to 2011, the SCA was a department of the Egyptian Ministry of Culture. In 2011, the Supreme Council of Antiquities became part of the independent department of the Ministry of State for Antiquites (MSA). In 2022, the department was folded into the Ministry of Antiquities and Tourism.

Although the name of the organization has changed over the years, the purpose and function of it has remained consistent.
