Municipalities of North Macedonia in the context of "Self-governance"

Skopje is the capital and largest city of North Macedonia. It lies in the northern part of the country, in the Skopje Valley along the Vardar River, and is the political, economic, and cultural centre of the country. As of the 2021 census, the city had a population of 526,502. Skopje covers 571.46 km (220.64 sq mi) and includes both urban and rural areas, bordered by several municipalities and close to the borders of Kosovo and Serbia.

The area of Skopje has been continuously inhabited since at least the Chalcolithic period. The city — known as Scupi at the time — was founded in the late 1st century during the rule of Domitian, and abandoned in 518 after an earthquake destroyed the city. It was rebuilt under Justinian I. It became a significant settlement under the First Bulgarian Empire, the Serbian Empire (when it served briefly as a capital), and later under the Ottoman Empire, which ruled the city for over five centuries. In 1912, following the Balkan Wars, Skopje was annexed by the Kingdom of Serbia. It became part of Yugoslavia after World War I and, following World War II, became the capital of the Socialist Republic of Macedonia, one of its constituent republics. In 1963, a major earthquake devastated the city, after which it was largely rebuilt with international assistance. Skopje became the capital of independent North Macedonia in 1991.

Centar Župa (Macedonian: Центар Жупа; Turkish: Merkez Jupa) is a village and seat in the municipality of Centar Župa, North Macedonia. The town is inhabited mainly by Turks.

Medžitlija (Macedonian: Меџитлија, Albanian: Mexhitli) is a village in the municipality of Bitola, North Macedonia, along the border with Greece. It was previously part of the former municipality of Bistrica. The village is located 14 km south of Bitola at the Medžitlija-Níki border crossing.

The Skopje Statistical Region (Macedonian: Скопски Регион, romanized: Skopski Region; Albanian: Rajoni i Shkupit) is one of eight statistical regions of North Macedonia. It also corresponds to one of the eight classified NUTS-3 statistical regions of Macedonia. The region is located in the north of the country, bordering Kosovo and five other regions of Macedonia. It encompasses an area of 1,813 km (700 sq mi), around the Macedonian capital of Skopje. The region includes seven other municipalities apart from the city of Skopje. With a population of more than 0.6 million inhabitants, it is the most populated region in the country.

Kučevište (Macedonian: Кучевиште) is the largest village in the municipality of Čučer-Sandevo, North Macedonia.

Zoviḱ (Macedonian: Зовиќ) is a village in the municipality of Novaci, North Macedonia. It used to be part of the former municipality of Staravina.

Bistrica (Macedonian: Бистрица) is a village in the municipality of Bitola, North Macedonia. It lies about 6.31 kilometres away from Bitola, which is the second largest city in North Macedonia.

Dolno Sonje (Macedonian: Долно Соње) is a village in the municipality of Sopište, North Macedonia. It is located on the other side of Mount Vodno from Skopje, but a road running around the mountain connects the two communities.
