Musicians use various kinds of chord names and symbols in different contexts to represent musical chords. In most genres of popular music, including jazz, pop, and rock, a chord name and its corresponding symbol typically indicate one or more of the following:

• the root note (e.g. C♯)
• the chord quality (e.g. minor or lowercase m, or the symbols or + for diminished and augmented chords, respectively; chord quality is usually omitted for major chords)
• whether the chord is a triad, seventh chord, or an extended chord (e.g. )
• any altered notes (e.g. sharp five, or ♯5)
• any added tones (e.g. )
• the bass note if it is not the root (e.g. a slash chord)

For instance, the name C augmented seventh, and the corresponding symbol C, or C, are both composed of parts 1 (letter 'C'), 2 ('aug' or '+'), and 3 (digit '7'). These indicate a chord formed by the notes C–E–G–B. The three parts of the symbol (C, aug, and ) refer to the root C, the augmented (fifth) interval from C to G♯, and the (minor) seventh interval from C to B♭.

In classical music from Western culture, a diminished seventh (play) is an interval produced by narrowing a minor seventh by a chromatic semitone, and its inversion is the augmented second. For instance, the interval from A to G is a minor seventh, ten semitones wide, and both the intervals from A♯ to G, and from A to G♭ are diminished sevenths, spanning nine semitones. Being diminished, it is considered a dissonant interval.

The diminished seventh is used quite readily in the minor key, where it is present in the harmonic minor scale between the seventh scale step and the sixth scale step in the octave above.

A seventh chord is a chord consisting of a triad plus a note forming an interval of a seventh above the chord's root. It can be viewed as an augmented triad with a minor seventh. When using popular-music symbols, it is denoted by +, aug, or . For example, the augmented seventh chord built on A♭, written as A♭+, has pitches A♭-C-E-G♭:

The A-flat (A♭) clarinet is the highest-pitched instrument of the clarinet family still manufactured. It is just over half the length of the common B♭ clarinet and pitched a minor seventh higher, a perfect fourth higher than the E♭ clarinet. The harmonic seventh interval, also known as the septimal minor seventh,or subminor seventh,is one with an exact 7:4 ratio(about 969 cents).This is about 32 cents narrower, with a more stable and consonant sound, than a minor seventh in equal temperament, and is up to 49 cents narrower than and is, "particularly sweetsweeter in quality" than an "ordinary"just minor seventh, which has an intonation ratio of 9:5(about 1018 cents).

The harmonic seventh arises from the harmonic series as the interval between the fourth harmonic (second octave of the fundamental) and the seventh harmonic; in that octave, harmonics 4, 5, 6, and 7 constitute the four notes (in order) of a purely consonant major chord (root position) with an added minor seventh (or augmented sixth, depending on the tuning system used).
