Lázaro Cárdenas (Spanish: [ˈlasaɾo ˈkardenas] ) is a port city in Michoacán bordered to the east by Guerrero. Lázaro Cárdenas is located in the southern part of the Mexican state of Michoacán, being the southernmost municipality in Michoacán. It was formerly known as Los Llanitos, but changed its name as a tribute to Lázaro Cárdenas del Río, a Michoacán-born politician who was president of Mexico from 1934 to 1940.

The city's coordinates are 17°57′00″N 102°12′00″W / 17.95000°N 102.20000°W / 17.95000; -102.20000, where the Río Balsas drains into the Pacific Ocean. In the 2005 census, the city's population was 74,884. It is served by Lázaro Cárdenas Airport. The municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas, which has an area of 1,160.24 km (447.97 sq mi), had a total population of 162,997 in 2005, and includes the metropolitan area of city, which includes the communities of Las Guacamayas, La Orilla, and La Mira y Guacamayas.

The Port of Acapulco is a port facility located on Mexico's Pacific coast in the state of Guerrero, in the naturally sheltered Bahía de Acapulco, 280 km ESE of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, and 300 km SSW of Mexico City.

One of Mexico's main cruise ports, Acapulco also handles petroleum products, breakbulk and Ro-Ro.

The Balsas River (Spanish Río Balsas, also locally known as the Mezcala River, or Atoyac River) is a major river of south-central Mexico.

The basin flows through the states of Guerrero, México, Morelos, and Puebla. Downstream of Ciudad Altamirano, Guerrero, it forms the border between Guerrero and Michoacán. The river flows through the Sierra Madre del Sur, and empties into the Pacific Ocean at Mangrove Point, adjacent to the city of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán. Several rapids along the course of the Balsas River limit its navigability and thus the river has been largely used for generation of hydroelectric power, flood control and irrigation.
