It was created in July 2020 as part of the reform of administrative divisions of Ukraine. The center of the raion is the city of Kramatorsk. Population: 543,371 (2022 estimate).

The 2020 administrative reform increased the raion in size merging with Oleksandrivka Raion, Lyman Raion, Kostiantynivka Raion, and Sloviansk Raion. All cities of regional significance within those raions were brought under the raion administration, including Kramatorsk, Sloviansk, Kostiantynivka, Druzhkivka, and Lyman.

Kramatorsk (Ukrainian: Краматорськ, pronounced [krɐmɐˈtɔrʲsʲk] ; Russian: Краматорск) is a city and the administrative centre of Kramatorsk Raion in Donetsk Oblast of the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine. Prior to 2020, Kramatorsk was a city of oblast significance. Since October 2014, Kramatorsk has been the provisional seat of Donetsk Oblast, following the events surrounding the war in Donbas. Its population is 147,145 (2022 estimate). It is an important industrial and mechanical engineering center in Ukraine. Kramatorsk is on the banks of the Kazennyi Torets, a right tributary of the Siverskyi Donets.

Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Kramatorsk has been hit by Russian shelling multiple times.

The Kazennyi Torets (Ukrainian: Казенний Торець; Russian: Казённый Торец) is a river in eastern Ukraine. The river travels in the Kramatorsk and Pokrovsk Districts in the Donetsk Oblast, and is a right tributary of the Siverskyi Donets.

Kramatorsk Raion in the context of Lyman, Ukraine

Lyman (Ukrainian: Лиман, IPA: [lɪˈmɑn]; Russian: Лиман, romanizedLiman), formerly known as Krasnyi Lyman (Ukrainian: Красний Лиман; Russian: Красный Лиман, romanized: Krasnyy Liman; lit.'Red Liman') from 1925 to 2016, is a city in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.

Until 2016 it also served as the administrative center of Lyman Raion, though administratively it was not part of the raion and incorporated as a city of oblast significance. It still serves as the administrative center of Lyman urban hromada and is part of Kramatorsk Raion. The population was 20,066 (2022 estimate), down from 28,172 in 2001.
