Ural Economic Region (Russian: Ура́льский экономи́ческий райо́н, romanized: Ural'skiy ekonomicheskiy rayon) is one of twelve economic regions of Russia. This prominent industrial region consists of the following subdivisions (with their administrative centers): Bashkortostan (Ufa), Chelyabinsk Oblast (Chelyabinsk), Kurgan Oblast (Kurgan), Orenburg Oblast (Orenburg), Perm Krai (Perm), Sverdlovsk Oblast (Yekaterinburg) and Udmurt Republic (Izhevsk). It is mostly located in the Central, and partly in the Southern and Northern parts of the Urals, but also includes parts of the East European and West Siberian Plains. Its extent is different from that of the Ural Federal District; Bashkortostan, Orenburg Oblast, Perm Krai and Udmurtia are in the Volga Federal District while the other three are in the Ural Federal District.

Udmurtia, officially the Udmurt Republic, is a republic of Russia located in Eastern Europe. It is administratively part of the Volga Federal District. Its capital is the city of Izhevsk.

It was established as the Udmurt (until 1931 — Votskaya) Autonomous Region on November 4, 1920.

The Izh (Russian: Иж; Udmurt: Оӵ, Oč; Tatar: Иж, romanized: İj [iʒ]) is a river in Udmurtia and Tatarstan, Russian Federation, a right-bank tributary of the Kama. It is 259 kilometres (161 mi) long, of which 97 kilometres (60 mi) are in Tatarstan, and its drainage basin covers 8,510 square kilometres (3,290 sq mi). It begins near Malye Oshvortsy, Udmurtia and falls to the Nizhnekamsk Reservoir, Kama River, near Golyushurma tract in Agryzsky District, Tatarstan.

The river's major tributaries are the Agryzka, Chazh, Kyrykmas, Varzinka, Varzi and Azevka rivers. The mineralization 300 to 500 mg/L. Its drainage is regulated. The Izhevsk Reservoir was constructed in 1760 to supply Izhevsk industry with water. Since 1978 it is protected as a natural monument of Tatarstan. There are notable mineral springs in Izh valley. Izhevsk and Agryz are the cities along the river.
